1866
A saw mill was built at Mt. Pleasant.
1872
Indian lands began to be sold to settlers. Harris Bros. built a grist mill and later acquired the saw mill and dismantled the same.
1875
Nearly every business house was destroyed by fire. Village organized.
1876
Court House was built. I. A. Fancher, State Senator, obtained a refund from Auditor General of over $10,000.00. This refund and $2,000.00 raised by subscription and $1,000.00 by taxation made the new court house possible.
1879
Dec. 15, Railroad into Mt. Pleasant was completed. $15,000 bonus and right of way was furnished by city.
1880
$10,000.00 was voted for a new school house. The trees on court house lawn were planted.
1882
Waterworks system installed.
1885
Ann Arbor road reached Mt. Pleasant.
1888
Gorham Bros. began building a plant for manufacture of fruit baskets.
1889
A franchise was granted by common council to Mt. Pleasant Electric Company to install an electric light and power plant. Capital stock $25,000. City is lighted by 42 are lights, 42 arc light tungsten lamps, and a few lesser lights. City pays $2375.00 for lights. Sacred Heart School opened with 150 pupils.
1892
Mt. Pleasant Improvement Co. was organized for purpose of building and equipping a normal school for training rural school teachers. .The corner stone of Normal University was laid – name later changed to Central Normal School and Business Institute.
