Wm. Russell, Sr.
(transcribed by: L. Johnson)
In the picture above you are looking at one of the pioneers of Weidman, Mr. Russell
being associated with the early history of the village, coming here in November, 1897.
He was born in Gratiot county in 1879. He worked for John S. Weidman in the mill
when first coming here, and for seven years was associated with his father in the livery
business under the firm name of J. L. Russell & Son.
On June 15, 1905, Mr. Russell began carrying mail, using horse and buggy, of course,
later taking to automobile. For 30 years he was a regular caller on routes one and two,
starting on the latter, and being later transferred to route one. On June 29, 1935, he was
placed on the retired list, and has been living on his farm at the south end of town.
As indicated in the picture, Mr. Russell (excuse us; we should say Bill) likes to fish,
and sometimes catches one or two that are worth writing home about.
We unite with Bill’s many friends in extending congratulations over his long term of
service successfully completed, and his standing as a respected citizen. Here’s hoping he
does even better in piscatorial achievement than the above picture indicates.
