ROSES FOR THE LIVING

Mrs. Winnifred Scott

In the spring of 1894 John S. Weidman had bought a large tract of timber adjacent to this

village. During that summer he cleared away a piece of land along the banks of the Cold-

water River just north of where the Holmes Milling Company flour mill now stands and

built a large saw mill and later a shingle mill. He also built a large planing and flooring mill.

During that summer he platted this village and named it Weidman. He employed a large

crew of men to run his lumber operations and these employees commenced to buy lots and

erect homes.

The next year the village needed stores to supply these men with goods and provisions.

During that year along came John A. Damon who opened a general store including drugs.

Also there came William Mills from his farm four miles east of the village on which he had

at that time a small country store, and he opened a general store under the name of Mills &

Scott Bros.; his half brother, Adam Scott, being in charge.

A few years later Adam Scott married Miss Winnifred Drallette, daughter of George

Drallette. Mrs. Scott a few years later commenced to help her husband in the store, and

Being a woman of unusual business ability, soon took over active management.

The business is now run under the name of Scott & Son. Under the management of Mrs.

Scott the business has grown to one of the largest implement and hardware stores in the

county. They now have a branch store in Mt. Pleasant.

During the years that Mrs. Scott has been doing business with the public she has made a

host of friends and built up a business that can well be envied by most men. In a very mark-

ed degree she is the possessor of a charming personality, thoughtfulness for the welfare of

others, and a spirit of helpfulness.
