MRS. ELLEN SWIX
Shepherd lost its oldest citizen last Thursday when Mrs. Ellen SWIX
known to all as "Granny" passed away at noon just 12 hours before she
attained her ambition of living 100 years.
Before coming to Shepherd about 40 years ago to care for her father, she
had spent many years in various activities.
She was born in Oro township, Simco County, Ontario to Mr. & Mrs. Henry
COLBRY and at the age of twenty left her home to take up work as a maid in
Detroit. Following this she became a cook an a boat making the run between
Detroit and Sault Ste. Marie, for some time. She then went to Chicago where
she spent several years as a nurse in a hospital then taking up work in a
man's overall and jacket factory working up from a factory worker to a
saleswoman for the Company and at this work she spent much time on
the road for the company, being connected with them for about 16 years.
During this time she married a man by the name of JONES just prior to the
big Chicago fire. One she was fond of relating was how she stood in the
river with her sewing machine for some time, it being the only possession
which she saved from the fire.
Mr. JONES passed away a few years after the fire and she continued
to live in Chicago earning her living at various vocations until coming
to Shepherd to care for her father until his death.
About 35 years ago she was married to William SWIX and they made
their home in Shepherd in the house in which she died until his death
about twenty years ago. They kept a horse and buggy and it was
a familiar sight to see them driving about the country visiting friends
and relatives.
Since the death of Mr. SWIX, she continued to live in Shepherd part
of the time in other houses which she owned and going about looking after
the several other pieces of property, giving up the active management of
this only about three years ago, when failing health and advancing age
forced her to do so. She however continued to live alone in her home
with the assistance of Frank MOORE, Mrs. C.S. McCLINTON and
nephew John COLBRY until about 3 months ago when Mrs. Zua COX
came to care for her.
On Friday morning it was announced over the radio program
"Breakfast at Sardi's" that she was 100 years old and an orchid was
being sent her. This however did not arrive until Monday.
She will long be remembered in this village as she was so often seen
in her shawl and cane going about the streets.
