MRS. EMMA L. FROST

 

Shepherd, April 9.Funeral services were conducted for Mrs. Emma L. FROST,

62, wife of Joseph R. FROST at the family residence on Orchard avenue at

2 o'clock Sunday afternoon. The Rev. Mr. L. J. HOOVER, officiated and

burial was made in the Salt River Cemetery. Mrs. FROST died April 4th, after

an illness of five weeks at the home in Shepherd.

 

Emma Leona SWIX was born 26 August 1888 to William & Zorado SWIX in

Wayne County, Michigan. At the age of five years she came to Coe 

township, Isabella County, where she had resided for more than 58 years.

She was united in marriage to Joseph R. FROST on 28th August, 1895, by

the Rev. Mr. F. M. McCLINTIC, a pastor here at that time. About 21 years 

ago, she with her husband and family moved to a home in the village of

Shepherded and have resided there since.

 

Mrs. FROST was an active member of the Christian Church and its

affiliations, all of which she was a member. She was a member of the

Rebekah Lodge and the Gleaner Aid, always active in their social and

fraternal activities.

 

She is survived by her husband, two daughters, Mrs. Hollid McCLINTIC of

St. Louis, and Mrs. Harry McCORMICK of Shepherd; two sons, Eugene

who resides on the home farm and Percy who resides at home; six

grandchildren, Alice, Robert, Doris, Francis, Donald and Jimmie McCLINTIC,

two sisters Mrs. William WALTER and Mrs. Roy GOULD, both 

residing in Lansing and two brothers P. H. SWIX and John SWIX of

Shepherd.

WAYNE PHILETUS FROST

 

Wayne Philetus FROST, son of Joseph & Emma FROST, was born

3 December 1911 at the farm home near Shepherd.

 

He passed away 28 November, 1929, at the age of seventeen years,

eleven months and twenty-five days. At the age of eight years he moved

with his parents to Shepherd, where he has since resided. He was a Junior

in Shepherd High School.

 

The past two summers he has attended Citizens Military Training Camp

at Camp Custer and Fort Brady.

 

Left to mourn their loss are his parents; two sisters, Retha McCormick OF

of Shepherd and Ione McCLINTIC of near Alma; two brothers, Percy of

Lansing and Eugene at home; three nieces and twp nephews, and a host

of relatives and friends.

 

He always had a smile and a kind word for everyone.

 

Those from out of town at the funeral services were: Mr. & Mrs. J. G.

FAUNCE, Mr. & Mrs. Roy GOULD and daughters, Edna and Eva,

Fred ALGATE, Elton SELFRIDGE and wife, all of Lansing; Mr. & Mrs.

BELLE GILLISON

 

Belle GILLISON of St. Johns died Thursday at Gratiot Community 

Hospital in Alma. She was 85 years old.

 

Funeral services will be Saturday at 1 p.m. at the Osgood Funeral Home in

St. Johns, Rev. Keith LADLER officiating. Burial will be at Mount Rest Cemetery.

 

Born in Duplain township, Clinton County on 15 December, 1893, she

was the daughter of James & Lillian BARTLETT CARROLL. She married

Albert GILLISON on 4 November 1915 in St. Johns. He preceded her in death.

 

She is survived by two sons, Stewart GILLISON of Shepherd and Dow 

GILLSION of Lansing; four grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

RACHEL MARGARET GILMORE

 

Rachel Margaret GILMORE of R-4, Mt. Pleasant, Michigan was born on

the 16th day December 1871 in Isabella County, Union township, and died

17 April 1963 at Central Michigan Community Hospital.

She was a life resident of Isabella county.

 

Funeral services were held April 19th at 2 p.m. at E.U. B. Church

with Rev. Sweard WALTON officiating. Interment was made in the

Salt River Cemetery.

 

Survivors are husband, Albert M. GILMORE; one son Maynard GILMORE,

3 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren; one brother George KENNEDY of

Mt. Pleasant.

JOSIE M. GOULD

 

Mrs. Josie M. GOULD,77,of 109 West Grand River Avenue, Lansing,

died Tuesday at Hastings. She was born in Shepherd 1 July 1885, and was

a resident of Lansing for 46 years.

 

Mrs. GOULD was a member of the North Presbyterian Church Circle 5, of

the Church and the Gleaners. She was the widow of Roy M. GOULD.

 

Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Fred (Eva) ALGATE of Utica, MI,

and Mrs. Bruce (Edna) CROTHERS of Vermontville, MI;6 grandchildren and

3 great grandchildren.

 

Funeral services were held Friday, November 30th at 10:00 a.m. from the

Gorsline Runciman Funeral Home, Rev. N. T. KEIZER of North

Presbyterian Church officiating. Graveside services were held at

1:00 p.m. Friday at Salt River Cemetery, Shepherd.

 

Pallbearers were Eston EVERETT, Paul EISENHAUER,

George FRIEND and Ole HARGROVE.

BERT GREEN

 

Funeral services for Bert GREEN, 81, who passed away at Sulpher Springs,

Florida,13 March 1951 were held Sunday at the Garber Funeral Home at

two o'clock with Rev. W. H. BELL officiating.

 

Mr. GREEN was a long time resident of Shepherd, having served as

postmaster during the major part of the twenties and early thirties. He

also was a member of the school board over a long period of time and was

active in various civic capacities.

 

Interment was made in the Salt River Cemetery beside his second wife who

preceded him in death.

 

Surviving him are several nieces and nephews.

MRS. FRANCES McLAIN HURST GRIEVE

 

Mrs. Frances Hurst GRIEVE passed away Thursday, 25 September 1947, at 

her home in Shepherd, Michigan, of a heart ailment.

 

The deceased was born in Smyrna, Michigan, to Edward & Mary McLAIN;

at an early age she moved with her parents to Pewamo, Michigan.

 

She married to Arthur HURST in1881.To this union were born two children:

Vera and Eugene. They moved to Shepherd in 1888;he became the publisher

of the Shepherd News until his death in 1892 and Mrs. HURST continued 

being publisher for a number of years with an assistant. The son, Eugene

HURST, passed away in 1901 at eighteen years of age.

 

Mrs. HURST married Dr. C. C. GRIEVE in 1902 who practiced in Shepherd until

entering the US Navy as a medical doctor; after retiring they returned to 

Shepherd and made their home, and he passed away in February 1939 while

spending the winter in San Diego, California.

 

She was an active member of the Shepherd Methodist Church and affiliates,

Eastern Star of which she was a Past Matron St.. Alma Shrine No. 26,

Shepherd Woman's Club, Maccabees of which she was a First Commander

when they organized in Shepherd, and Past Matron Club of the Eastern Star.

 

She leaves her only child, Mrs. Vera WETZEL of Shepherd, four grandchildren,

Eugene H. FIELD of Tulsa, OK, Arthur B. FIELD of Shepherd, Mrs. Francis

SMILEY of Royal Oak and Mrs. Olive COOK of Lansing. Also 15 great

grandchildren, one great great grandchild, a number of nieces and nephews

and a host of friends.

 

Funeral services were held at the Garger Funeral Home September 28, 1947

at 2:30 p.m., with Rev. W. E. TIMMS officiating.

Interment was in Salt River Cemetery.

MAE GRUBER

 

L. Mae GRUBER,97,passed away at the Gratiot County Medical Care

Facility in Alma on Monday, October 18, 1971.

 

She was born 24 June 1874 in Altona, Michigan.

 

Miss GRUBER was the oldest member of the Westlawn Church of Christ, 

and was a charter member of the Eastern Star, Coe Chapter #98.

 

Funeral services will be held today, Wednesday, October 20th, at the

Westlawn Church of Christ at 2 p.m., with Brother Ben BAUMGARDNER

officiating. Interment will be in the Salt River Cemetery.

 

The Garber Funeral Home was in charge of the funeral arrangements.

 

Surviving are three nieces, Mrs. Louis SPAULDING of New York, Mrs.

John RADEMACHER of New Jersey, and Mrs. Maynard MILLER of Alma.

ELSIE BACHAN GULICK

 

A former resident of Shepherd, Mrs. Elsie GULICK, passed away Thursday,

March 23, 1972.Services were held at the Skinner Funeral Chapel in Eaton

Rapids and graveside services were held at Salt River Cemetery in

Shepherd, Monday, March 17, 1972.

 

Surviving are her son, Timothy GULICK, in the Air Force and stationed in

England, and a daughter Mrs. David (Cindy) OLSON and four grandchildren,

her mother, Mrs. Joseph (Bachan) PECHECEK; four sisters, Mrs. Mary LUPO

of Harper Woods, Mrs. Lillian OGDEN of Flint, Mrs. Agnes DUKE of Akron and

Mrs. Rosemary MYERS of Shepherd; and one brother Robert BACHAN of

St. Louis.

 

Services were officiated by Rev. Grant SCHRAUGER of Eaton Rapids.

Sgt. DAVID HAMBLIN, Jr.

 

Funeral services were held at Atlas, Michigan, Monday, January 17th for

Sgt. David HAMBLIN, Jr., son of Mr. & Mrs. David HAMBLIN of Greendale.

 

David entered the service 1 July 1940, and was killed in action in Italy,

October 3, 1943.

 

He leaves to mourn their loss, besides his parents, Mr. & Mrs. David HAMBLIN, Sr.,

four sisters, Mrs. Jessie WESTFALL of Bancroft, Mrs. Vera NILES of Atlas, MI,

Mrs. Grace LUNDGREN of CO., and Mrs. Ethel LINSKEY of Flint, and a host

of relatives and friends.

EMORY LAWRENCE HARLESS

 

Emory Lawrence HARLESS was born in Lincoln County, West Virginia on

21 December, 1896, and died 20 June, 1946 at Sterling.

 

He was married to Merle McCLURE, who with is four children survives him.

Mrs. Ronald BROKAW, Mrs. Raymond BROKAW, living near, Olsen David and

Joy, both at home. Also surviving is his father, Walter HARLESS of 

Griffithsville, West Virginia; five brothers, hilt of W.VA., Foster and Harold and

Chester all of Mt. Pleasant, and Dell of Rosebush.

 

Mr. HARLESS was an ordained minister in the Baptism Church and a veteran

of WWI.

 

Funeral services were held at the Garber Funeral Home Sunday afternoon,

Rev. L. J. HOOVER officiating and interment in the Salt River Cemetery.

 

Fellow employees of the Basin Oil Company at Sterling acted as pall-bearers.

DAVID L. HARLESS

 

David L. HARLESS,526 W. River Rd., Gladwin, died Saturday in Gladwin.

He was 45 years old.

 

Funeral services were Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the Garber Berry Funeral Home

in Shepherd ,Rev. David MEYER officiated. Interment was at the Salt

River Cemetery.

 

Born 30 November, 1933, in Lincoln county W. VA., he was the son of 

Emory and Mearl HARLESS.He married Sherry VanHORN on 30 July 1955

in Mt. Pleasant.

 

He served in the Navy and worked at Dow Chemical Company. He was also

a former resident of Shepherd.

 

He is survived by his wife, Sherry, one son David B. of Gladwin; two daughters,

Mrs. Clark (Cindy) SCHRAM of Carpenterville, ILL and Mrs. Jean Anne LONG

of Gladwin; three sisters, Mrs. Ronald (Lorine) BROKAW of Coleman, Mrs.

Rev. Raymond (Zula) BROKAW of Coleman and Mrs. James (Joyce) RAAB of

Midland.

MRS. MEARL McCLURE HARLESS

 

Mearl M. HARLESS of 108 W. Cottage St., Shepherd, Michigan died Wednesday

at the Clare Nursing Home. She was 80.

 

Funeral services were Saturday at the Garber-Berry Funeral Home in Shepherd.

Rev. David MEYER officiated. Interment was at Salt River Cemetery in Shepherd.

 

She was born 28 July 1898 in West Virginia, the daughter of Mordecai and Lou

Emma Currey McClure. She was married to the Rev. Emory HARLESS on

21 June 1919, in West Virginia. He preceded her in death in 1946

 

She also was preceded in death by 15 brothers and sisters.

 

She had lived in Shepherd since 1938.

 

Surviving are one son, David of Gladwin, three daughters, Mrs. Loraine

BROKAW of Coleman ,Mrs. Zula BROKAW of Coleman, and Mrs. Joyce

RAAB of Midland,14 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

PEARLE HOOK

 

Pearle E. HOOK,79,of Route 3,Shepherd, died Thursday, February 3rd

at the Ingham County Hospital.

 

She was born in Midland County on 12 September 1892.

 

The retired school teacher was a member of the Michigan Education

Association, Gleaners and the Westlawn Church of Christ, Shepherd.

 

She is survived by three sisters, Mrs. Blanche KELLY, Mrs. Tess GILBOE, 

and Ethel FENBY, all of Lansing, and numerous nieces and nephews.

 

Funeral services were held Monday, February 7th at 2:30 p.m. in the 

Garber Funeral Home with Brother Ben BAUMGARDNER officiating.

 

Burial was in the Salt River Cemetery.

Funeral services were held at the Garber Funeral Home in Shepherd Monday

morning at 10:30 for Mrs. Elizabeth HOUCH, 77, who died at her home near

Shepherd Saturday morning. Rev. C. A. BORMAN officiated and she was taken

to Denver township cemetery for burial.

 

Mrs HOUCH was born in Austria to Phillip & Magdalina BINDER.

 

She is survived by her husband John, three daughters, Mrs. Howard

KNOWLES and Mrs. Karl ERICKSON of Detroit, and Mrs. Eugene ROSS

of Shepherd; two sons John of Detroit and Jacob of Shepherd;

three sisters, Mrs. Henry STUMPF of Lepton, Mrs. Adam HOLP of 

Rosebush and Mrs. Frances FLAKENBERGER of Germany and one

brother Phillip BINDER of Leaton.

ROSE N. HOWE

 

Rose Newman HOWE, 60, passed away June 3rd at the Au Gres Marily

Memorial Hospital after a short illness.

 

Born 21 January 1894, at Hersey, Michigan to Myron & Harriet Kenney NEWMAN,

she had resided in Shepherd since 1919.Having graduated from Central 

Michigan College in Mt. Pleasant, she taught at several rural schools in the

county, just finishing this year at the Rhode School.

 

Funeral services were held at the Garber Funeral Home Sunday missing info. here.

Interment was at the Salt River Cemetery

 

Surviving are the husband, Ernest A. HOWE; one son, Marshall G. HOWE of 

Lansing; two daughters, Mary HOWE of Detroit and Mrs. Jerrine WIGHTMAN

of Lansing; one brother George NEWMAN of Alma; four sisters, Mrs. Lau

MYERS of Middleville, MI., Mrs. Flora BUYSSEE of Lansing, Mrs. Clara

BRUINSLOT of Hersey, and Mrs. Minnie BOWMAN of Evart.

Also three grandchildren.

WILLIAM HOWE

 

The sad news of the death of William HOWE was announced on Tuesday

morning, the end coming at four o'clock of that morning, at his home south

and east of Shepherd.

 

Mr. HOWE was born 21 September 1852, in Wayne County, Michigan, being

52 years and 6 months old at his death. He was married to Emaline LEONARD

17 March 1875 and moved to Isabella County in1881.He united with the

Christian Church in 1897.Four children were born to them as follows:

Avis, who died in infancy, Ernest, Curtis and Winnie Leonard, residing in Coe.

Mr. HOWE moved on the farm where he died in1888.

 

Funeral will be held from the residence today (Thursday) with Elder C. E.

PICKET officiating.

 

Mr. HOWE was a man held in high esteem by his large number of acquaintances

who immeasurably regret his departure. His frank, open manner and 

generous nature paved the way to close personal friendships with all with

whom he was thrown in contact, and always had a pleasant word for

everybody. No death which has occurred in this community for some time

is probably more sincerely regretted and the Republican extends

heartfelt sympathy to the sorrowing relatives.

URI HUNGERFORD

 

Uri HUNGERFORD, 81, of North Third Street, Shepherd, died at the Gratiot

Community Hospital in Alma on Monday, October 22nd. 

 

He was born February 6th in Fremont township (no year listed). Mr. HUNGERFORD

was a retired farmer and U. S. Post Office employee.

 

Funeral services were held on Thursday,25 October, at 2 p.m. at the Garger-

Berry Funeral Home, with Brother Ben BAUMGARDNER officiating.

Interment was in the Green Cemetery.

 

Surviving are his wife, Rena, one son, Clarence of Breckenridge; three

daughters, Mrs. Basil (Hazel) BARNES, Mrs. Albert (Inez) GUILD, and

Mrs. Melvin (Glenna) POST of Mt. Pleasant;11 grandchildren,

20 great grandchildren, twp brothers Elias of Shepherd and Ben of

Enwall. One son, Edward, predeceased him.
