IRMA PARKER BRICKNER

 

Irma Ruth BRICKNER,66, of 11402 N. Jerome Rd., St. Louis, passed away

Friday, April 20th, at St. Mary's Hospital in Saginaw.

 

Mrs. BRICKNER was born 8 February 1913 in Paxton, ILL, the daughter of

William & Lula Bates PARKER. She came to this area in 1918.In Shepherd, Michigan

on 31 December 1933 she was united in marriage to Lawrence W. BRICKNER, of

Shepherd. She had lived at the present address for the past 33 years.

She was a member of the St. Louis Wesleyan Holiness Church.

 

Surviving are her husband, Lawrence, two daughters, Mrs. Gilene WELLER of

Alma, and Mrs. Robert (Cheryl) SMITH of Freeland; two sons, Aaron of

St. Louis and Larry of Shepherd; two sisters, Mrs. Gayle (Gladys) HOLE of Mt.

Pleasant and Miss Evelyn PARKER of Ithaca; one brother Mr. Glenn PARKER

of Detroit;10 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren.

 

Funeral services were held Monday April 23rd, at 1 p.m. from the St. Louis

Wesleyan Holiness Church. The Rev. Robert H. FLEMING officiated and

interment was in the Salt River Cemetery in Isabella County.

LEO J. CALDWELL

 

Leo J. CALDWELL,24, formerly of Mt. Pleasant and recently employed at

Plymouth, Michigan, was killed when the car in which he was riding hit a tree

in Wayne County Thursday, March 30th.

 

He is survived by his three children, Sandra Lynn, 5,Leo Jr., 3, and Ruth Ann 2;

also his parents, Mr. & Mrs. Dale CALDWELL of Mt. Pleasant.

 

Services were held Tuesday, April 2nd, at the Garber Funeral Home in Shepherd

with the Rev. Terry ALVERSON officiating, and interment was made in the

Salt River Cemetery.

EVELYN ALICE CARROLL

 

Mrs. Evelyn Alice CARROLL was born 31 January 1861 in Burnet, TX to

James and Louisa TOMLINSON and passed away at her home in Shepherd after

a long and courageous illness on 8 March 1954.

 

She was married to Lawrence CARROLL of Nova Scotia in Burnet, TX on

8 June 1887 and they came to Michigan in September of 1902 and made their 

home at Irishtown that winter, moving to Shepherd in 1903 where she resided

until her death.

 

During the years of marriage, Mr. & Mrs. CARROLL celebrated their 50th

wedding anniversary with a part at the home of her daughter Ella and went on

to mark the sixtieth anniversary before the death of Mr. CARROLL on

Christmas Day 1949.

 

She was a faithful member of the Christian Church and Aid Society and was

always found ready to lend a helping hand to all who needed her.

 

Funeral services were held at her home in Shepherd on Thursday, March 11th

at 2 p.m., with Rev. Charles ROSS and Rev. W. H. BELL officiating.

Interment was made in the Salt River Cemetery.

 

Casket bearers were Lloyd CARROLL, Russell STILGENBAUER,

Harold JOHNSTON, Lawrence DURHAM, ale STALTERS and

Theo LYONS.

 

Surviving her are two daughters and one son, Ella, Ardner and Alfred of 

Shepherd and Ethel JOHNSTON of Rosebush. Two sons, Raymond, who died

in TX and Dale preceded her in death.

 

Out of town people who attended the funeral were Mr. & Mrs. D. L. DeGRAW of

Temple; Mrs. Bruce McGILL of Lansing; Mrs. Mary LITTLE and Ivan CARROLL of

Mt. Pleasant; Mr. & Mrs. Justin CARROLL, Martha CARROLL and Mrs.

Elizabeth SCHAFFER of Saginaw;  Mrs. Sadie DESMOND of Alma; Mr. & Mrs.

Frances CARROLL of St. Louis; Mrs. Jack FULLER of Houghton Lake;

Lyle JOHNSTON of East Jordan; Howard JOHNSTON, Margaret CONWAY of

Mt. Pleasant, and Mr. & Mrs. Roy MATTESON of Rosebush.

ETHEL A. CASZATT

 

Mrs. Ethel CASZATT,86,of 310 W. Cottage St., Shepherd, died suddenly

at her home on the 6th of April.

 

She was born 21 March 1891 in Winn. She was married to Oliver CASZETT,

who preceded her in death.

 

She was a member of the Joe ULCH Post V.F.W. Auxiliary, the D.A.R.,

the Coe Chapter of the Rebekahs. The Westlawn Church of Christ, and the

Church Helping Hand Society.

 

Surviving are six sons: Gaylord of Hart, Vernon of CA., Jack of Shepherd,

Lavant of St. Louis, Phil of Shepherd, and Harlan of Owosso; three daughters,

Mrs. Percy (Verdith) HAMLIN of Shepherd, Mrs. Elaine BUSH of Shepherd, and

Mrs. Martin (Evelyn) COUGHLIN of Mt. Pleasant. Also surviving are

41 grandchildren,62 great grandchildren, and 9 great great grandchildren.

Preceding her in death were two sons, Paul and Stanley.

 

Services are Saturday, April 9th at the Westlawn Church of Christ, at 2 p.m

with the Rev. Joseph DUDLEY officiating.

The Garber-Berry Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

MRS. ZELMA CHAMBERLAIN

 

Mrs. Zelma CHAMBERLAIN,77,of Greendale Township, died Monday,

April 1st, at the Central Michigan Community Hospital in Mt. Pleasant.

 

Mrs. CHAMBERLAIN was born in Paulding County, Ohio, on 21 March 1866.

Her husband, the late William CHAMBERLAIN, died 4 years ago.

 

She is survived by one son, Cleown Letherman of Shepherd and four

grandchildren. Two Brothers, Lester BIDLACK of Detroit and Everett

BIDLACK of Quincy, Michigan; two sisters, Florence JOHNSON of

Mt. Pleasant, and Dora JOHNSON of Grant Ham, Alberta, Canada.

 

Funeral services will be held Thursday, April 4th, at 2:00 p.m. at the

Garber Funeral HOME in Shepherd with Rev. Newton HUFFINE officiating.

Interment will be in the Salt River Cemetery.

MRS. ZOE CHAPIN

 

Funeral services were held for Mrs. L. T. (Zoe) CHAPIN Monday,22 July,

at the Beebe Funeral Home at Ithaca. Mr. & Mrs. CHAPIN were residents of

Shepherd and operated a clothing store here for several years before

moving to Ithaca about 19 years ago.

 

She is survived by her husband and one son, James.

LEWIS CHENEY

 

Lewis CHENEY,78,a resident of this community for 25 years, died 

Sunday at the home, east of Shepherd, after an illness of several months.

 

A native of Salem, IND., he had married Orval FULZ in June of 1901.

 

The widow survives, as do four brothers and four sisters.

Funeral services were to be held at 2 o'clock Tuesday afternoon from the

Garber Funeral Home, with Rev. A. BAUGHEY of Pontiac to

officiate and burial was to be in the Salt River Cemetery.

MISS ADDIE CHILDS

 

Miss Addie CHILDS, a prominent resident of Shepherd, died yesterday

at her home. She was 84.Miss Daniel CHILDS and Susan Redman CHILDS

was the daughter of Pioneer CHILDS.

 

The funeral will be held from the Garber Funeral Home in Shepherd at

2 p.m. Thursday with the Rev. G. B. MATTERSON conducting the services.

 

Interment will be at the Salt River Cemetery.

MRS. JENNIE TARR CHUBB

 

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon, October 22nd, 1950, for

Mrs. Jennie Tarr CHUBB,27, at the Shepherd Methodish Church with

Rev. Myron CLEMENT officiating.

 

Mrs. CHUBB was born the 28th of September, 1923, at Piney Fort, Ohio,

to Joseph & Bessie TARR and came to this community as a child.

 

She was a graduate of the Shepherd High School with the class of '42, and

was married to Robert CHUBB last May.

 

Surviving are her husband and two daughters, Marie Elizabeth and 

Judy Iola WALKER (by a previous marriage), her mother, Mrs.

Bessie TARR of Shepherd, three sisters, Mrs. Mary COONS and 

Mrs. Helen YOUNG of Midland and Mrs. Elizabeth WRIGHT of Portland,

Oregon and two brothers, Joseph TARR with the U.S. Navy, stationed

at Oakland, CA, and Steve with the Army in Germany.

Another brother, William, was killed in action in Germany during

WWII in 1946.

 

Interment was made in the Coe Cemetery.

ROBERT L. CLARK

 

The remains of Second Lieutenant Robert L. CLARK, son of Mr. & Mrs.

Lee CLARK of Shepherd and Hazel Park was killed in action July 25, 1944,

arrived in Shepherd Wednesday, March 14th, 1951.

 

Lieut. CLARK was born at Cedar, Michigan in Lenawee Co., on 5 Oct 1921.

He graduated from the Hazel Park High School in 1939 and attended

Albion College in 1940.On 15 March 1943 he enter the Army Air Corps and

was shot down over Linz, Austria while flying his 13th mission. He was

temporarily interred there by the Germans, but was later moved to the

National Cemetery in Liege, Belgium.

 

Surviving besides his parents, Mr. & Mrs. Lee CLARK, are two brothers,

David, age 17 and Raymond, age 14, both at home; also by his maternal

grandparents, Mr. & Mrs. Robert TURNER of Sterling, Michigan.

 

Services were held at the Garber Funeral Home, Saturday March 17th,

at 2 p.m., with Rev. Myron CLEMENT officiating. Interment was made in the

Salt River Cemetery on the Raymond CLARK lot, under the auspices of the

Joe ULSH Post. V. F. W.

 

Lieut. CLARK lived in Hemlock, Mt. Pleasant and Shepherd before moving to 

Hazel Park. He entered the service just one week before the death of his

grandfather, Raymond CLARK, a long time resident of Shepherd.

Mrs. Pearle PIATT was called to Conneaut, Ohio the first of the week

to attend the funeral of her father. B. CLINE.

 

She was accompanied by George BAILEY and daughter, Helen.

 

Mr. CLINES death followed that of his wife by only two weeks.

CHARLES E. COBB

 

Charles E. COBB of 607 Eats Street, Howell, Michigan, died at the 

McPherson Community Health Center on Thursday, October 18th.

 

He was born 16th February 1910 in Lincoln township, Isabella County, MI,

and a former resident of Shepherd.

 

Funeral services were held on Monday, October 22, from the MacDONALD's

Funeral Home of Howell, with Rev. William R. JONES officiating; interment

was in the Lincoln Cemetery, Isabella County.

 

He is survived by his wife, Ella, sons Charles W. COBB, Allen E. COBB

and daughter (obviously an omission here - no name printed);

7 grandchildren of Howell;5 sisters, Mrs. William SHIPLEY of Ann Arbor,

Mrs. Bird HAVEN, Mrs. Edward COLE, Mrs. Charles SCHULTS all of

Lansing, and Mrs. Roy DEMING of Shepherd.

Pfc. TRUMAN COLLIER

 

Funeral services were held for Pfc. Truman W. COLLIER, at Oxford, MI,

from the Methodish Church Sunday at 2 p.m.

 

Truman enlisted in Co. A., 6th Armored Infantry Regiment, on the 3rd

of December, 1942.He was killed in action at Anzio Beach Head on

31 January 1944.The body was buried in our military cemeteries in

southern Italy, until it was brought to Oxford.

 

Truman W. COLLIER was born at Gull Lake, Saschuain, Canada on 

11 June 1921 and the son of Willard and Esther COLLIER, formerly

of Shepherd.

 

At the age of 13 he moved back here with his parents for two years before

going to Oxford.He attended public school at Shepherd and Mt. Pleasant

training school. 

 

He leaves to mourn, his mother and father, wife Nora, three brothers,

Wesley, Delwood and Bert; and one sister Helen, all of Oxford.

 

Relatives attending the services from here were Mr. & Mrs. Elmer COLE of

Alma, Mr. George WONSEY and Luule, Carol Lee and Lowell;

Also Mrs. Muzzetta HANN, Mr. & Mrs. Warren COLE, and Mr. & Mrs.

Joe SHANAHAN, all of rural Shepherd.

Cleda Beatrice COLLINS, age 37 years., 9 months, of Beaverton,

died 16th December, 1947, at the home of her mother,

Mrs. Alvin CURTISS of rural Shepherd.

 

She was born 7 March 1910 in Pinegrove, West Virginia, to

Alonzo and Marget CURTISS.

 

She is survived by her husband, Harley W. COLLINS of Beaverton,

her mother, Mrs. Alvin CURTISS; four sisters, Mrs. LeRoy PAXTON

of Cambridge, Ohio, Mrs. Russell DICKENS of Harrison, Mrs. Guendel

TEAGARDEN of Shepherd, and Mrs. Harold SHERWOOD of Lansing;

three brothers, Argel CURTISS of Harrison, Basil CURTISS of Reed City,

and Hirchel CURTISS of Lansing.

 

Funeral and burial services were held Sunday,21st of December at the

Presbyterian Church in Hebbardsville, Ohio

NATHAN COMMINS

 

Nathan COMMINS, formerly of Shepherd, passed away at Ocala, Florida

last Thursday morning, April 14th.

 

Mr. COMMINS who suffered a stroke a couple of years ago, had hoped the

warm weather would strengthen him, but was unable to make a recovery.

 

A brother of Mrs. COMMINS, Mr. George WEST, and family formerly

of Shepherd are located at Ocala, and was with Mrs. COMMINS and

son at the time of her bereavement.

 

Burial was in Florida

THOMAS CONNELLY

 

Thomas CONNELLY,87,a native of Irishtown, died Sunday at the home

of a niece, Mrs. Rexford WILLIAM, after an illness of two weeks.

He had lived at the WILLIAMS home for the past few months.

 

The body was removed to the Garber Funeral Home where prayers will

be said at 8:30 o'clock Tuesday night by the Knights of Columbus of

Mt. Pleasant and at 9:30 o'clock by the Irishtown Church parish.

Funeral mass will be spoken at 10 o'clock Wednesday morning at

St. Patrick's Church by Rev. Father KLOS of St. Louis. He will be

assisted by Rev. Father John McNEAL of Grand Rapids and Rev. Father

Joseph HENIGE of Pewamo.

 

Burial will be in the Irishtown Cemetery.

BERTIN ALLEN CONVERSE

 

Bertin Allen CONVERSE was born 3 August 1882 in Rosebush and

departed from this world 21 March 1947.

 

He was united in marriage 16 October 1915, to Miss Una ELLIS

of Shepherd. To this union was born three children: Mrs. Dortha 

PALMER of Mt. Pleasant, and Earl and Betty at home.

 

Mr. CONVERSE passed away after an illness of one year, two months, and

five days. He leaves to mourn his loss his wife; three children; two

grandchildren; his mother, one brother Ray CONVERSE of Mt. Pleasant,

two sisters, Mrs. Alfred CASWELL of Mt. Pleasant, and Mrs. Edith REYNOLD

of Clare, and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.

 

Funeral services were held the 24th of March at 2 p.m. at the Stinson

Funeral Home, with interment at the Riverside Cemetery, Rev. Arlie

R. COLLINS officiating.

ALBERT W. COOK

 

Impressive Masonic funeral services for Albert W. (Bert) COOK, 53,

were conducted at two o'clock Friday afternoon at the Garber Funeral Home

in Shepherd with the Rev. E. N. MAYHEW officiating.

 

Mr. COOK's death followed a heart attack Monday morning, February

24th, in Tampa, Florida at the home of his son, Capt. Farrel COOK. Mr.

COOK had been spending the past two months there trying to regain

his health.

 

Mr. COOK, who was one of Shepherd's prominent citizens and one of

Isabella County's most active political figures, was born to William S. and

Mary Jane COOK at Walled Lake, near Novi, 8 October 1887.At the

age of four years he came with his parents to Isabella County, where he has

spent the greater part of his life. On December 25, he was united in marriage

to Miss Ruby FARRELL. To this union one son, W. Farrell COOK, was born.

 

Mr. Cook was a leading business man here, having been engaged in the drug 

business for more than twenty years. He was identified with the progressive 

movements of the village and took a keen interest in both civic and

educational affairs. He served on the board of education several terms.

 

Mr. COOK was a member of the village council for several terms and held other

positions of trust. He was affiliated with the Salt River 3288F. and A.M.

Lodge, the I. O.O.F, a charter member of the Elks of Mt. Pleasant and

was recently presented with a certificate of life membership in that order.

He was a charter member of the Shepherd Rotary Club and a member of the

Order of the Eastern Star.

 

He was a member of the Isabella County Republican Committee and at 

one time served as it's chairman. During the past several months, he held

the position of State Sales Tax representative.

 

Surviving him are his widow, his son Capt. W. Farrell COOK of

Tampa, Fla., his mother, Mrs. Mary COOK of Shepherd and two

brothers, Louis COOK of Flint and William J. COOK of Lansing.

 

All local business places were closed between the hours of two and 

three o'clock Friday afternoon in observance of the funeral service.

 

Close friends serving as pall bearers were: H.. E. McCORMICK,

Jack ARNDT, Charles WILSON, Stanley STAHLMAN,

William BRYANT, Russell STILGENBAUER, and

Alfred CARROLL.

WALLACE CORNELL

 

Wallace CORNELL, son of Mrs. Leora CORNELL of near Oil City, is the 

latest of our boys to be reported as making the supreme sacrifice in this war.

A telegram was received last week telling of his death on February 4th,

 

He was mortally injured on February 4th when a wall fell and it was found

necessary to dig him out, together will others who were with him.

 

Wallace had been in the service for two years, having been overseers since

a year ago last fall and was serving with the Third Army at the time of his death.

MRS. MARGARET H. CRAWFORD

 

Funeral services for Mrs. Margaret H. CRAWFORD, 83, were held Saturday

afternoon at Coe Christian Church. She had lived on the farm in Coe township

the past 56 years.

 

Mrs. CRAWFORD who died Tuesday evening, January 24th, at the home of 

her daughter, Mrs. Floyd GRUBER, was born 6 April 1892, in Cochronpon, PA.,

a daughter of Cornelius and Ann KITER. Her husband, William, died in 1931.

They were married in Bethany township in 1891.

 

Surviving are three children: Mrs. Floyd GRUBER of Pleasant Valley, Del

CRAWFORD of Tempe, Arizona (former St. Louis business man), and

Mrs. Orne FRALEY of Boyne Falls. There are two brothers, Percy KITER 

of St. Louis and Frank KITER of Banister she also leaves two sisters,

Mrs. Charles RIES of St. Louis and Mrs. John JOHNSON of Muskegon.

There are 28 grandchildren and 44 great grandchildren.

 

Mr. & Mrs. CRAWFORD moved to northern Michigan, following their

marriage, and he worked in the lumber camps until 1900 when they moved 

to the Coe township farm where Mrs. CRAWFORD resided at the time

of her death, which came following a lengthy illness.

 

Mrs. CRAWFORD was a member of the Coe Christian Church.

 

The Rev. W. H. BELL and the Rev. Emmanuel COLLINS officiated for the

funeral and burial was in Coe Cemetery. Moody Funeral Home of Alma

had charge of arrangements.

 

Pallbearers were Elywn STAHL,Lyle LEONARD, William LEONARD,

John CURTIS, Clarence CHILDS and Royal GILMAN.

RUSSEL J. CURTISS

 

Pfc. Russel J. CURTISS was born 4 November 1916 in Lincoln township.

He was the son of Mr. James R. & Hazel Thomas CURTISS.

 

He was inducted into the Army 31 October 1942, Infantry serving in the

Pacific 18 months, was killed in action 13 June 1945 in Mindanao Island.

 

He is survived by his parents; three sisters, Maxine GILLETTE of Forest

Hill, Harriet ROSS of Midland and Wanda McNIELL of Shepherd. John W.,

Robert L., Billy E. and Barbara at home.

 

The body arrived Thursday 2 September, at 1:38 p.m. and was taken home,

services were held Friday at 2 p.m. at the Coe Christian Church under auspices

of Joe Ulsh Post V. F. W. Rev. Clarence WOOD officiated.

 

Interment was in Salt River Cemetery.

DONAL DAVIS

 

Donal Edward DAVIS, 71, died Saturday, February 12th at Central Michigan

Community Hospital in Mt. Pleasant of a long lingering illness.

 

He was born the 26th of August, 1900.He was a veteran of WWI, and Military

Rites will be given.

 

He is survived by his wife, Lucille DAVIS and also three brothers, Arthur DAVIS of

Potterville, Francis DAVIS of Beaverton, and Crest DAVIS of Dewitt.;

five sons, Deral DAVIS of Dewitt, Robert DAVIS of Shepherd, Keith DAVIS of

Owosso, Larry and Jerry at home; eight daughters, Mrs. Emil (Eva) BENDA

of Lansing, Mrs. Roman (Mary) LATOSKI of Merrill, Mrs. Ira (Donna) DeLONG

of Shepherd, Mrs. Theodore (Judy) LATOSKI of Mt. Pleasant, Mrs. Kay

ROPER of Sunfield, Mrs. Nancy HUTCHINSON of St. Louis, Mrs. Patricia

FRIEND of Breckenridge and Miss Jackie Sue DAVIS at home.

 

Also surviving are seven step-sons and one step-daughter;74 grandchildren

and 17 great grandchildren and also several nieces and nephews.

 

Funeral services will be held today, Wednesday ,February 16th, at

2:00 p.m. from the Garber Funeral HOME. Burial in the Salt River Cemetery.

 

Mr. DAVIS was a long time resident of Shepherd.

LUCY M. DEAN

 

Mrs. Lucy M. DEAN, 68, was found dead at her home June 4th apparently 

being stricken by a heart attack. She was the wife of the late Lou DEAN, who

died in 1952 while serving as Sheriff of Isabella County.

 

Mrs. DEAN was born in Kent County on 5 February 1896, the daughter

of William & Phebe SMITH. She was a member of the Coe Chapter

O.E.S. No. 98.

 

Funeral services were held at the Garber Funeral Home at 2 p.m. Monday,

June 7th, with Rev. W. H. BELL officiating. Interment was in the Salt

River Cemetery.

 

Surviving is a son Paul GREEN of Phoenix, Arizona; two step-sons, Walter

DEAN of Shepherd and Joe DEAN of San Matee, Ca; a step-daughter,

Margaret DECKARD of Mt. Pleasant; two brothers Robert and Harry

SMITH both of Rockford; three grandchildren and one great grandchild.

CHARLES DeBOIS

 

Charles DeBOIS of Route 3, Shepherd, died December 6th.

He was born 25 November 1907 in Clare.

 

Funeral services will be held Thursday, December 9th, at 2 p.m. in the

Chapel of the J. J. Rush Funeral Home in Mt. Pleasant, with the Rev.

Pfc. Albert L. DeLONG, son of Dennis & Laura Reynolds DeLONG, was

born 16 August 1922 in Coldwater township, Isabella County, Michigan.

He was inducted into the Army on March 26th, 1945 and went overseas

in September of 1945.He was killed in action in France on December 4th, 1945.

 

Memorial service was held from the Shepherd Methodist Church on January

7th, 1946.Together with his parents there are three sisters, Edna WILLIAMS of

Riverdale, Helen YARNELL of Shepherd, and Alice of Riverdale; five brothers,

Ira DeLONG of Albuquerque, NM, Eugene of Winn, William Wesley and Walter

at home under Auspice Joe Ulsh Post V.F. W. 

 

Services Thursday, September 9th Salt River Cemetery, Rev. W. H. BELL

officiated, Auspices Blanchard American Legion, interment in

Elvia DENTON, 63, of R-1 Shepherd, passed away Sunday, February 24th

in the Saginaw General Hospital.

 

She was born in Saginaw on 20th of February, 1900.

 

Rev. Herbert MAGUIRE officiated at the funeral services held Tuesday,

February 26th, from the Stinson Funeral Home, withy interment in the Kelly

Cemetery in Greendale township.

 

She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Hugh ROBINSON of Shepherd; one

son William GRIFFIN of Saginaw; three step-daughter, Mrs. Marie JEWEL and

Mrs. Isabella ROBERTS of Shepherd, and Mrs. Mary DIEHL of Clearwater, FL;

two step-sons, Jack and Roy DENTON of Mt. Pleasant and 12

grandchildren.

FREDERICK T. DeRUSHIA

 

Alma: Services are to be held Thursday for Frederick T. DeRUSHIA, 65, of

1214 Dean St., Alma, Mr. DeRUSHIA died Monday at Gratiot Community

Hospital in Alma following a short illness.

 

He was born in Farwell on 12 March 1911, the son of Fred & Fessie Amy

DeRUSHIA. He married the former Irene LYNCH in Shepherd on

26 June 1937.

 

Mr. DeRUSHIA was a lifetime resident of Gratiot County and was

employed as a senior craftsman for the Total Leonard, Inc., of Alma.

He was a member of the Masonic Lodge of Alma.

 

Surviving are his wife; three sons, David of Alma, Tom of Arlington, TX,

and Bob of Kalamazoo; one daughter, Joan STEER of Alma, and 

11 grandchildren.

 

Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday from the Dewey Funeral

Home in Alma, Rev. Michael STEERE will officiate and burial will

be in Riverside Cemetery in Alma.

GEORGE DREAMER

 

George DREAMER, 67 year old Custer County resident since 1941, died

Friday at Pine Ridge Hospital. He had been a rancher in the Limestone

area since coming from Oglalla.

 

Funeral services were held on Tuesday afternoon at the Oglalla

Methodist Church.

 

Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Mrs. Verbena CROW and

Geraldine CHALMERS, both of Los Angeles, CA, and Joyce DREAMER 

of Shepherd; a brother Aaron and sister Emma, both of Oglalla.

FRANK DUFFY

 

Frank DUFFY, 61 years old, was born in Isabella County, in Lincoln

township, 17 October 1892.

 

He was found dead in his room at the Castle Hotel in St. Louis, by

Mrs. DURHAM. He was held at the Wright Funeral Home.

 

His parents were Bernard & Bridget DUFFY.

 

Survivors are one brother, Jim DUFFY, who resides in Saginaw and

several nephews and nieces.

 

Funeral services will be held at the Irishtown Catholic Church Thursday 

at 10:00 a.m. with Father Joe FAVARA officiating.

Interment will be in Irishtown Cemetery.

DOCTOR GORDEN A. DUMAS

 

The community was shocked Friday morning to learn that Dr. Gorden

A. DUMAS, our new Doctor, had been killed in an auto accident in Grand

Rapids Thursday evening, where he had been attending a medical meeting 

with a couple of Doctor friends, and former service buddies.

 

The car in which he was riding and driven by Dr. COOK of White Cloud,

collided with a vehicle driven by a member of the Grand Rapids Fire Dept.,

throwing Dr. DUMAS into the windshield. He was badly cut and died before

help could reach him. One other passenger was also injured, but will recover.

 

The village is slowly recovering from the first shock, to the full realization

of the misfortune suffered by the community as the Doctor had, in his

quiet, friendly way, won the respect and admiration of a lot of people in

the area in his short stay here.

 

Dr. DUMAS was born at Alma, 14 May 1921, and received his medical

education at the U. of M. Medical College. He saw three years of

service in the United States Navy and was appointed resident physician of

St. Josephs Mercy Hospital in Detroit and he also engaged in general

practice there for about a year before opening his office here.

 

Funeral services were held at the Zion Lutheran Church at St. Louis

Sunday afternoon at 1:30.His final resting place was in the

Riverside Cemetery at Alma.

 

He leaves his wife, Kathryn, a son Michael, and infant daughter, Linda,

and his parents, Mr. & Mrs. Albert DUMAS of Fort Wayne, IND.

Edward DUGGAS, son of Edmund & Margaret Quinn DUGGAN, was

born 16 August in Lincoln township, Isabella County, Michigan

and passed away at the hospital in Mt. Pleasant Tuesday, February

20th, 1945.

Dorothy J. EDGAR,52,of 203 South First Street, Shepherd, passed away

at her home on Sunday, April 20th.She was born the 26th of June, 1924

in Oklahoma.

 

Dorothy was a life long resident of this area and formerly worked

at the Shepherd Clinic.

 

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, April 13th, at 1 p.m. from

the Garber-Berry Funeral Home, with Rev. M. L.LAVENDAR

officiating, interment was in the Salt River Cemetery.

 

Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Richard (Ruth Ann) BELTINCK and

Mrs. Jeffery (Kimberly) DARNELL, both of Mt. Pleasant; one son,

William LANTZ of Coffeyville, KS, and one brother, Donald

CATLETT of Florida.

Mrs. Bertha Adele EDWARDS,65,was born in Ohio 9 January, 1883,

to George & Elizabeth CISO MACKLING. In 1901 she was married to

Sherman EDWARDS in Ohio. Her death came unexpectedly Friday.

 

She is survived by the following children: Ray EDWARDS of Eaton

Rapids, Mrs. Ida BARLEY of Alma, Mrs. Leon BEST of Lansing, Lloyd

EDWARDS of Shepherd, Mrs. Dora MOULTON of Merrill, Don EDWARDS

of Shepherd, and Donna May of Shepherd; brothers, Grover MACKLING

of Stony Ridge, OH., Frank MACKLING of Sycamore, OH., and Asa MACKLING

of Dayton, OH; sisters Mrs. Anna WILKER of Bloomingdale, OH., and

Mrs. Blanche BARKER of Sycamore, OH.; seven grandchildren and

one great grandchild.

 

Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at 2'oclock, Rev. W. H. BELL

officiating and interment in the Salt River Cemetery.

She had lived in Shepherd since 1913.

RAYMOND G. FARNSWORTH

 

Funeral services were conducted by Rev. William E. TIMMS at the

Pleasant Valley Methodist Church Friday, for Raymond G. FARNSWORTH,

64 years of age, and a farmer of Pleasant Valley.

 

He was a member of the Midland County Poor Commission for four years, and

a member of the St. Louis (not sure is it's Band or Bank), and the St. Louis

Cooperative Creamery boards.

 

He had been a supervisor of Jasper township for 12 years, also clerk.

He was a member of the Pleasant Valley Methodist Church.

 

The funeral services were in charge of Moody funeral home; burial was

in Homer Cemetery, Midland.

 

Surviving are the widow, Mrs. R. FARNSWOTH; three children, Mrs.

Marjorie LEFLER and Norman FARNSWOTH, both of Midland, and

Mrs. Madeline SPRINGER of Mt. Pleasant; four sisters, Mrs. Oliver

PALMER, Mrs. Grace Thomas, Mrs. Reka BARNHART, all of

Midland, and Mrs. Gladys JASON of Williamston.

WILLIAM FARRELL

 

William FARRELL, son of Michael & Minerva FARRELL, was born

August 6, 1869 in New York State, and departed this life on November 24th,

1946, at the age of 77 years,3 months, and 18 days.

 

He came to Michigan to make his home when a small boy.

 

On the 2nd of July 1895, he was united in marriage to Mary HARKNESS of

Edmore, who preceded him in death eleven years ago.

 

To this union was born four children, two having died in infancy. He leaves

to mourn their loss two sons, John and Leon both of Blanchard; two

brothers, Henry of Ionia, and Clarence of Muskegon;8 grandchildren and

one great grandchild besides several nieces and nephews.

 

Funeral services were held November 26th, at 2 o'clock at the Stebbins

Funeral Home in Edmore, with interment to be made in Vinewood Cemetery,

Edmore.

MORA V. BAYES FICKLE

 

Mora V. FICKLE, wife of William FICKLE, prominent Shepherd business man,

died very suddenly Saturday night at their home.

 

She was born in Defiance County, Ohio, to James & Catherine Lehman BAYES

on the 22nd of March 1880.

 

She married to William FICKLE at Hicksville, Ohio on the 8th of August, 1896.

They celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary in August of 1946.

 

Surviving besides her husband are found children: Mrs. M. D. STILGENBAUER

of Espanola, N. Mex., Hollis FICKLE of Brethern, MI., Mrs. F. E. WILLIS of

Royal Oak, MI, and Mrs. William GLEVENGER of Shepherd, MI: four

grandchildren, fours sisters, Mrs. Luther SMITH of Farmer, OH., Mrs. Clara

PHILLIPS of St. Johns, MI, Mrs. Will HILBRET of Toledo, OH., and Mrs.

Harry GILSON of Holt, MI; four brothers, Richard BAYES of Lansing, Fred

BAYES of Pasadena, CA., Harry BAYES of Hillsdale, MI., and Clyde BAYES

of Grand Rapids, MI

 

Services will be held from the Garber Funeral Home in Shepherd, Wednesday,

March 2nd , 1949, at 2:00 p.m. with Rev. W. H. BELL officiating.

Interment in Salt River Cemetery.

EUGENE FIELD

 

Eugene FIELD, a former resident of Shepherd, but later of Tulsa, OK, died

early May 30th, at a Tulsa hospital having been rushed to the hospital after

a severe heart seizure.

 

Eugene, about 60 years of age, was born in Shepherd, a son of Mr. & Mrs.

Horace FIELD. He spent his early years here and graduated from the 

Shepherd High School. He was married to Donalda SERVOSS, also of

the Shepherd vicinity.

 

After a few years of employment at Shepherd Milling Co., of which his father

at the time of his death in 1918, was part owner, and later as manager of 

elevator at Sanford, he became associated with Dow Division of Dow Chemical.

Soon he was transferred to Tulsa, Oklahoma, in an official capacity with Dowell.

 

Surviving besides the wife, Donalda, are three daughters, Mrs. Bill (Rebecca)

SHAWMEYER, Mrs. Robert (Caroline) STEWART, Mrs. Sandy (Norma)

ALLEN; one brother, Arthur of Mt. Pleasant; two sisters, Olive of

Lansing and Frances of Royal Oak, Mrs. Mabel BRATTIN of Shepherd

and Mrs. Nellie RICHIE of Lansing are aunts of Eugene.

 

Final rites and burial were held in Tulsa Saturday morning.

We were sorry to receive word of the death of Francis Joseph 

FITZGERALD,48, of Flint. He was the husband of Marcella WALLING.

 

Mrs. FITZGERALD, as a girl, lived with her parents near Shepherd. She was

left with three children. Mr. FITZGERALD was formerly of Mt. Pleasant.

William J. FITZGERALD,86, of Route 3,Shepherd, died at the Isabella

County Medical Care Facility on Thursday, January 27th.

 

He was born the 12th of July 1895 in Gratiot County; was a veteran of

WWI and served in the Canadian Army. Mr. FITZGERALD was retired

from the Greyhound Bus Company.

 

He is survived by a brother, Floyd FITZGERALD of Shepherd.

 

Funeral services were held on Saturday, January 29th from the Garber 

Funeral Home with Rev. Joseph DUDLEY officiating.

Interment was in Salt River Cemetery.

BERNICE FLORIAN

 

The body of Mary Bernice FLORIAN of rural Shepherd was recovered

in a drainage ditch northwest of her home on Jerseyville Road, one-half

mile east of Mission Road at 8:50 a.m. Tuesday morning after law

enforcement agencies and over 100 volunteers searched for her throughout

Monday night.

 

Mrs. FLORIAN was found in several feet of water, and although investigation is

being conducted, it is assumed that she may have drowned in the 

drainage ditch. Dr. Howard DEARING pronounced her dead at the scene.

 

Red Cross workers from Mt. Pleasant were on the scene Monday night and

Tuesday morning providing coffee and donuts for more than 100 searchers.

 

Mrs. FLORIAN was born 2 October 1901,is survived by two sisters, Marcella

ADAMS of Lansing and 'Sister' Maria Gabriel of Detroit; five brothers,

Leonard and Frank COURTER of Lansing, Wallace and John COURTER of

Detroit and Robert COURTER of Tucson, Arizona.

 

She was a member of the Altar Society of the St. Patrick's Irishtown Church.

Rosary services will be held Friday, November 22nd, at 10 a.m. at the 

St. Patrick's Irishtown Church, with interment in St. Patrick's Cemetery.

MARION G. and MARTHA C. FOSTER

 

Marion G. and Martha C. FOSTER, age 62,died the 18th of April, 1951

at the farm home in Chippewa Township.

 

Marion G. was born 26 January 1889 in Wood Co., OH to Christian & Jenny

FOSTER. Martha C. was born 15 April 1889 in Wood Co., OH to James& Edna

CASNER. They both came to Michigan with their parents while very young

and have lived here since.

 

Surviving are Clyde FOSGETT of Shepherd (Mrs. FOSTER's son), sons

Chrissie FOSTER of Shepherd, Bryan FOSTER of Alma, Edwin FOSTER

of Saginaw; two daughters, Mrs. Raymond ENDRES of Mt. Pleasant, and

Mrs. Lester SNYDER of St. Louis. Surviving Mr. FOSTER are five brothers,

Omer and Ryan of Flint, Bryan of Mt. Pleasant, Everett of Midland and

Carl of Saginaw; two sisters, Mrs. Ines NYSONGER of Flint, and Mrs.

Odessa CASNER of Mt. Pleasant; surviving Mrs. FOSTER were brothers

Jess CASNER of St. Louis and Chancy CASNER of Mt. Pleasant, Also

Will CASNER of Mt. Pleasant and Matt CASNER of Fort Huron.

Twenty grandchildren survive besides many nieces and nephews.

 

Funeral services were held at the Garber Funeral Home, Saturday,

April 21st, with Rev. W. H. BELL officiating. Interment was at the

Chippewa Township Cemetery.

Mrs. Margaret Adelia FOY, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. William DUNN,

was born 9 November 1866 at Ontario, Canada, and passed way

Tuesday, November 13, 1945, at her home in Shepherd, very suddenly.

 

She has been a resident of this village for about 12 years.

 

Surviving her are her husband, N. L. FOY; one sister, Mrs. J. H. HUDSON

of Merrill, a brother Benjamin DUNN of Port Perry, Ontario, and 

several nieces and nephews.

 

Funeral services were held Friday afternoon at the Garber Funeral Home

with Rev. George BOLITHO officiating, and interment was made in the

Salt River Cemetery.

BURT G. FREEMAN

 

Burt G. FREEMAN,78,Sarasota, Florida died March 5th at the Sarasota

Hospital. He had been a resident of Sarasota for 30 years.

 

He was born at Shepherd,21 August 1875, the eldest son of Mr. & Mrs.

George FREEMAN. He was a retired sawmill owner and cabinet maker

by trade. He married to Emma B. STRUBLE on 9 December 1902,

and to this union six children were born: Orval F., and Jesse B. of

Sarasota; Henry A. and Alfred A. of Tampa; Mrs. Sherman ROBERSON of

Campbellton, FL, and Mrs. Felxi FELTMAN of Murdock, FL

 

Also surviving are eighteen grandchildren and five great grandchildren;

two brothers, Elmer FREEMAN of Mt. Pleasant and John FREEMAN of

Alma; one sister, Mrs. Olive CASNER of Mt. Pleasant.

 

The funeral was held March 7th and burial was in Sarasota Memorial Park,

beside his wife, who preceded him in death nine years ago.

HENRY A. FREEMAN

 

Henry A. FREEMAN, 68, died Saturday at Alma where funeral services

were held Tuesday. He was buried in Salt River Cemetery, at Shepherd.

 

He lived in Isabella County most of his live and leaves his wife, Mina,

a son Carl FREEMAN of Pontiac, a brother and two sisters, Clark FREEMAN 

of Shepherd, Mrs. Orley JENKINS of Lakeview and Mrs. Hazel CATLIN of

Mt. Pleasant, and five grandchildren.
