Death of Aged Man Cause of Fire Monday
Attack of Heart Failure Thot Responsible for McGuire Blaze
Death of Dennis McGuire, aged 82, Monday night is thot to have been responsible for a fire which started in the McGuire home on Pickard avenue, in the midst of which his charred body was found by his daughter, Miss Mary McGuire.
The alarm of fire was turned in about 10:30 Monday night and when the department reached the scene, the body of Mr. McGuire had been carried downstairs by his daughter, who suffered severe and painful burns on her hands and arms. The blaze was extinguished by the use of chemicals.
It is believed by members of the family and the fire department, that Mr. McGuire suffered a heart attack as he was retiring for the night and fell across his bed with a lighted kerosene lamp in his hand, the light immediately setting fire to the bed clothing. It is also thot that the aged man died from heart failure rather than from burns and that he had passed away before Miss McGuire reached him in a futile attempt to save his life.
Mr. McGuire was well known in Mt. Pleasant and vicinity, having resided here for more than forty-two years, his present home on Pickard avenue having been his place of residence for the past 37 years.
He is survived by two daughters, Mary and Anna at home. A third daughter, Mrs. John Gannon, resides in Detroit, and a son, Joseph, lives in Mt. Pleasant. Mary, the daughter who was painfully burned, is principal of the Fancher school.
Mr. McGuire also is survived by a brother in Canada, a sister in Montana, and a sister in Colorado.
Funeral services were held this (Thursday) morning at the Sacred Heart church.
