1919 was the
first year that women were able to register to vote in local and state elections
in the State of Michigan.
By a 35,000 vote margin male voters approved a
State of Michigan Constitutional Amendment that they had previously
rejected
in 1875, 1912, and 1913. In 1875, women were granted the right to
vote in "school elections" in their local
townships. On August 26th, 1920 the 19th Amendment to the Constitution took effect
nation wide.
Michigan was the second state to ratify the amendment, on June
10, 1920.
