These transcripts were from the scrapbook of E. Evelyn Fuller, who lived on a Centennial Farm in the Winn Area. Miss Fuller has been keenly interested in preserving the newspaper clippings of residents of Southwestern Isabella County and Mt. Pleasant area, where she taught in the elementary schools for several years. Many of these people were pioneers or children of pioneers and contributed to the history and development of their communities. The newspaper source is unknown but it is highly likely that the source was a Mt. Pleasant paper Miss Fuller is affiliated with the DAR and is active in that organization*

Arthur Swan, 77, of Blanchard, died Tuesday at Central Michigan Community Hospital.

Surviving are two sons, John of Trenton and William of Mt. Pleasant, four grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Funeral services will be from Crittenden Funeral Home with Rev. Mike Mattison officiating, and burial in Pine River cemetery.
 
 

Hazel Snyder was born Dec. 2E, 1892 in Isabella County, and died Feb. 19, aged 78, at Central Michigan Community Hospital.

Funeral services will be at Stinson Funeral Home, with Rev. Athel Lynch officiating, and burial in Union Cemetery near Winn.

Surviving are daughter, Mrs. Virginia Fayrett of Mt. Pleasant, son Kirtland Parker of Chicago, six grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, a step daughter and stepson and step-grandchildren.
 
 

Donald Noble Smith was born Sept. 22, 1893 in Fremont township of Isabella county, and died age 73 on May ll at Gratiot Community Hospital.

He was a retired electrician, a member of the First Methodist Church and a World War I Veteran.

Funeral services were at Stinson Funeral Home, with Rev. Richard Youells officiating, and burial was in Riverside cemetery.

Surviving are his wife, Gladys, two daughters, Mrs. Dorothy Bowen and Miss Helen M. Endres both of Mt. Pleasant, two grandchildren, three great grandchildren, two sisters, Bertha Fuller of Winn and Ona Davidson of Mt. Pleasant.
 
 

Clyde R. Lyon, 1539 E. River Rd., died May 16, at the Saginaw County Hospital. He was born April 24, 1882, in Lincoln township of Isabella county. He was a trashing and sawmill operator and a farmer.

He is survived by his wife, Alfretta, three sons, Wayne, Robert, and Fenton, all of Mt. Pleasant, six daughters, Mrs. Burdette (Blanche) O'Connor, Mrs. Russell (Mae) Lawler, and Mrs. James (Alice) Harrison, all of Mt. Pleasant, Mrs. Glee (Evelyn) Pitts and Mrs. Clair (Marjorie) Cook, both of Alma, and Mrs. Sherman (Eloene) Eldred of Blanchard, 38 grandchildren and 43 great grandchildren.

Marcil Maertens, Deerfield Rd. in Union twp. died March 24 at the Clare Nursing Rome. He was born Feb. 2, 1884, in Belgium.

The funeral will be held Friday, March 27, at 4 p.m. from the Stinson Funeral Home. Rev. G. Edgar Schade will officiate and burial will be at Riverside cemetery.

Mrs. Margaret G. Oberly, 80, of Lansing, and formerly a resident of Winn, died Friday, Aug. 7, at the Ingham county Extended Care Facility in Okemos.

Born Aug. 15, 1889, in Isabella county, she resided for many years in Winn before moving to Holt.

Services will be at Stinson Funeral Home, G. Edgar Schade officiating, and burial in Chippewa Cemetery.

Surviving are 7 children, four sons, Lloyd and George Casner of Mt. Pleasant, Howard and Donald Casner of Lansing, three daughters, Mrs. Hazel Tanner of Barrvton, Mrs. Margaret Hetherington of Lansing, and Mrs. Grace Wood of Lansing, thirteen grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren and one great great grand-child.
 
 

Mrs. Adelia Harrison, 82, of 1219 Upton St., died Tuesday

in Golden Acres Rest Rome in St. Louis.

Mrs. Harrison was born Feb. 24, 1885, in Isabella county. She was a former resident of Deerfield township.

She was a life member of the Winn Order of Eastern Star Chapter 377, and the Coomer Ladies Aid.

Funeral services will be held Thursday at 3 P-m- from the Stinson Funeral Home with the Rev. G. Edgar Schade officiating. Burial will be in Riverside cemetery.

Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Leo Torpey and Mrs. Floyd Nicholson, both of Mt. Pleasant, nine grandchildren and twenty-one great grandchildren.
 
 
 
 

Lloyd Henry Hulse of E. Valley Rd. died Saturday in Montcalm Co. He was born Dec. 25, lF99, in Fremont township.

He was a retired custodian at Central Michigan University, a member of the Winn Masonic Lodge 383 and a life member of the Winn Eastern Star 377.

Survivors include his wife, Leone, one sister, Mrs. George (Thelma) Sandbrook of Montcalm county, and one brother Cree Hulse of Lansing.

Funeral services will be held Thurs at the Stinson Funeral Home at 2 p.m. for Myron H. Maxwell, 82, who died Monday at Central Michigan Community Hospital where he had been a patient for one week. Burial will be in Riverside cemetery. Officiating at the funeral will be Rev. Edward L. Krause.

Mr. Maxwell, a retired farmer and former Justice of the Peace, was born June 25, 1888 in Isabella county where he had been a lifelong resident. He was a veteran of W.W. 1, and & member of both the First United Methodist church and the Isabella County Farm Bureau.

He leaves his wife, Alma, three sisters, the Misses Mary and Florence Maxwell, and Mrs. Sara VanWormer, all of Mt. Pleasant and several nieces and nephews.
 
 

Mrs. Kenneth (Helen) Dargitz of 2799 F. Broomfield Rd., died Monday, Nov. 2, at her home. She was born June ll, 1909, in Isabella county.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, Nov. 4, at 2@p.m. at the Stinson Funeral Home, with Dr. Neil Bintz, pastor of the First United Methodist church, where Mrs. Dargitz was a member, officiating.

Surviving besides her husband, Kenneth, are Diane Faulkaar of Mt. Pleasant, Mrs. Darlene Finch of Philadelphia, Pat Mrs. Marilyn Frayre of Lansing, a son, Gale Dargitz of State College, Pa., and six grandchildren; a sister Mrs. Alfred Huber of Mt. Pleasant also survives.
 
 

A former Deputy Sheriff of Isabella co., and former assistant Chief of Mt. Pleasant Fire Department, William Franklin Grinnell, died Tursday, Oct. 15, at Mason county Memorial Hospital in Ludington, where he had been a patient five days. He made his home at 515 S. Kinney Blvd, Mt. Pleasant.

Mr. Grinnell who retired from Bordens Condensery Co, was born Nov. 30, 1881, in Isabella county. He was a life member of the Mt. Pleasant Odd Fellows Lodge.

he married on June 14, 1901, a daughter, Mrs. Frank (Maye) Madsen of Ludington, a son, Robert Paul Grinnell of Rockford, six grand-children, four great grandchildren, and half-brothers, Milan and Lee Grinnell of Lansing.

Lillian. M. Hall, 79, of Route 3, Mt. Pleasant, died May 9 at her home. She was born April 16, 1887, in Isabella county.

She is survived by daughters, Mrs. Kathleen Kyser of Shepherd, Mrs. Anna Maria VanLieu of Winn, Mrs. Donna Acker of Winn, Mary at home, sons Charles of Winn, Herbert of Mt. Pleasant, and Bob at home, 20 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. She was a member of St. Leo’s Altar Society in Winn.

Funeral services will be from St. Leo’s Church with burial in Calvary cemetery. The body wi11 lie in state at the family residence east of Winn until time for the services. Rosary will be held at F p.m. Thursday.
 
 

Anna Mae Kindig, 44, of 7306 Summerton Rd., Shepherd, passed away Saturday, Sept. 11, 1971, at the Central Michigan Community Hospital. She was born July 30, 1927, in Ada, Mich. Mrs. Kindig was 6 member of the Westlawn Church of Christ.

Funeral services were held on Monday, Sept. 13, at 2 p.m. from the Westlawn Church of Christ with Bro. Ben Baumgardner officiating. Interment was in Salt River cemetery. Garber Funeral Rome was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Martha Jane Curtiss, 87, of Winn, died Saturday at Central Michigan Community Hospital. She was the widow of John Curtiss who preceded her in death in l960.

She was born Dec. 7, 1880, in Fremont township where she was a life resident. She was a member of the Winn Methodist church.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the Winn Methodist church with burial in Union cemetery.

Mrs. Curtiss is survived by two sons, Howard Curtiss of Winn, and Harold Curtiss of Shepherd, and a daughter, Mrs. Ruth Barker of Lansing.

Also surviving are a brother, Jess Delo of Lansing, nine grandchildren and twenty-eight great grandchildren.
 
 

Glenn W. Banks, 87, of Blanchard, died at the Tri-county hospital in Edmore Tuesday. He was born May 5, 1893, in Ada. He was a retired carpenter.

He is survived by two sons, Neil and Derwin, and one daughter Jean Holzman, all of Detroit, one sister, Mrs. Geneive Oberlin of Blanchard, and six grandchildren.

Services will be held Friday at 11 a.m. from the Crittenden Funeral Home in Remus, with Rev. Forrest Knauss and Rev. Ira Bush officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Memorial Gardens in Livonia.
 
 

Mary Demlow of Mt. Pleasant, died at Central Michigan

Community Hospital after a short illness.

She was born July 23, 1880, in Rolland, Ohio and had been a resident of Isabella county since 1918.

Mrs. Denlow was a member of the First Church of Christ.

Funeral services will be Saturday, November 10, at Stinson Funeral Home with Terry Alverson officiating. Interment will be in Union township cemetery.

She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Helen DeRocker of Lake and one son, Ted Demlow of Shepherd, one brother Samuel Masters of Blanchard and one sister Mrs. Mattie Demlow of Mt. Pleasant.
 
 
 

G. Kyser of rural Mt. Pleasant, died Jan. 9, in St. Mary's hospital in Saginaw, of injuries suffered in an accident which occurred on Dec. 21, in Mt. Pleasant.

He is survived by his wife, Ida, two sons, Dwight of Shepherd, and Eldon of Mt. Pleasant, three daughters, Mrs. Albert (Evelyn) Getchell of Mt. Pleasant, Mrs. Edmund (Phyllis) Hoffman of Mt. Pleasant and Mrs. Floyd (Elizabeth) Curtiss of Shepherd, 20 grandchildren 17 great grandchildren and one brother David of Shepherd.

Services will be Saturday, January 11, at Gerber Funeral Rome in Shepherd with Charles McNary officiating. Interment will be in Lincoln cemetery.
 
 
 
 

Fred H. Delo, 95, a resident of Missaukee county for many years died at Ridgewood Hospital at Ypsilanti, Mr. and Mrs. Delo had been with a daughter, Mrs. Claude (Thelma) Kinsey at Milan for the winter,

Mrs. Delo was born January 8, 1872, in Fremont township, Isabella county.

He married the former Melissa Meyers in 1894 in Shepherd. They moved to Missaukee county in 1917.

Surviving are the widow and daughter, Mrs. Kinsey, daughter Mrs. Goldie Haenke of Farwell, son Emerson of Lake City, brother Jesse of Lansing, sister Mrs. Martha Curtiss of Winn, 9 grand-children, 15 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren.

Rev. William J. Schoettle officiating. Graveside service was at Union cemetery at Winn.

Funeral services were held Sept. 29, at Winn Methodist church for Harvey Otto Demlow. Burial was in Union cemetery.

Mr. Demlow was born March 28, l887, in Fremont township, Isabella county, the son of Charles and Minnie Hillman Demlow. He spent his entire life in Isabella county.

He served in World War I, and was a member of both Oddfellows and Eastern Star.

In 1919, he married Marie Larsen in Blanchard.

Two daughters and one son were born to this union, one daughter Dorothy died in 1919.

Wm. F. Demlow, 85, of Mt. Pleasant, died at Broomfield Hospital Aug. 29. He was born in Tonawanda, New York Dec. 11, 1873. Mr. Demlow was a retired farmer and a member of Winn Masonic Lodge.

Funeral services will be at Stinson Funeral Home, Rev. Kenneth Cutler officiating and burial in Union cemetery.

Surviving are his wife, Nellie, 2 daughters, Mrs. Orpha Chamberlin of Detroit, and Mrs. Winnie Gorr of Mt. Pleasant, 3 brothers, Edward of Mt. Pleasant, Harvey of Winn, and Dewey of Lansing, 5 sisters, Mrs. Mary Dargitz of Blanchard, Mrs. Grace Sandbrook of Planchard, Mrs. Sadie Foster of Blanchard, Mrs. Linda Dargitz of Mt. Pleasant and Mrs. Odessie Visger of Elorida.
 
 

Louis R. Baker died Jan. 4, in Isabella County Medical Care Facility after an illness of five weeks.

Mr. Baker was born in Isabella county March 16, l892, and was a lifelong resident here. He was a farmer.

Funeral services will be held at Stinson Funeral Home, with Rev. Robert Smith officiating. Internment will be in Riverside cemetery.

He is survived by his wife, Nettie, four nieces and a nephew.
 
 

Ira A. Baker of Pontiac died, age 76, August 1, at Pontiac General Hospital. He was born July 22, 1882, in Isabella county and lived near Winn until twenty-seven years ago.

Funeral services will be conducted by Rev. Edison Vane, with interment in Union cemetery

Gerald S. Fuller, sixty-seven, director of federal farm programs in Isabella county for the last sixteen years, died Tuesday, March 16, 1954, in Community hospital where he had been confined since suffering injuries in an accident near Winn.

Mr. Fuller was also president of the Winn State Bank, and a director of Farmers Mutual Fire Insurance Co. He was a member of the Winn Masonic Lodge.

Survivors include his wife, Bertha, a daughter, Miss Evelyn Fuller, a teacher at Fancher school in Mt. Pleasant, and a sister, Mrs. Ruth Miller, of Mt. Pleasant.

Funeral services will be held at Delo church, southwest of Winn and burial in Union cemetery.
 
 
 

He was born in England April l5, 1884, and came to Mt. Pleasant in 1911, where, he worked as a shoemaker until his retirement. He was a member of the Church of England, Past Master of the Wabon, Masonic Lodge 305, a 32nd degree Mason, member of the Order of Eastern Star and a life member and past Noble Grand of the

Survivors are his wife, Florence, one daughter, Mrs. Dorsey Fortner of Mt. Pleasant, three grandchildren, three brothers and a sister in England.

Funeral services were held at the Kerwin Charel in Springport last Friday for Mrs. Emmerette Favorite Ferris, a pioneer resident of this area, who died the previous Thursday evening at the age of 104 years at a nursing home in Battle Creek.

Mrs. Ferris was born May 9. 1857, in this area. The Favorite School was named for her family and was built on their property.

Surviving are two nieces, Mrs. Edna Klooz of Eaton Rapids, and Mrs. Marguerite Kellogg of Charlotte, two nephews, Will Smith of Jackson and Morris Pixley of Sidney, Michigan.

Don Riggle, 77, Fremont township, died January 28, in Tri-county Hospital in Edmore where he had been a patient for three days.

He was born in Fremont township July 5, 1901 and was a lifelong resident of the area. He was a farmer, a member of Cedar Valley Masonic Lodge, and a life member of the Winn O.E.S. #377.

Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Teresa Smith of Mt. Pleasant, Mrs. Mac (Donna) Sellers of Remus, Mrs. Harold (Retha) Forquer of Shepherd, twelve grandchildren, twenty-three great grandchildren, a brother, Harold Riggle of Winn, two sisters, Mrs. Bernice Albert of Lansing and Mrs. Zora Chadwick of Harrison.

Funeral services will be at the Winn Methodist Church with burial in Union cemetery.
 
 

Andrew J. Courser, 64, of Blanchard, died suddenly at hie

home on Saturday.

He was born July 5, 1901, in Rolland township of Isabella county.

He was well known as an auctioneer. He was a member of the Lodge #219 in Millbrook and a charter member of the CLarebells Encampment #7 in the I.O.C.F. Lodge of Mt. Pleasant.

Funeral services will be held in the Crittenden Funeral Home

in Remus with Rev. Billy Kennedy officiating. Burial will be in

Decker cemetery in Millbrook.

Surviving him are his wife, Rose, two sons, Stanley and Orville Courser of Blanchard, and one brother William Courser of Clare, and twelve grandchildren.
 
 

Mrs. Anna Wood of Winn died at Central Michigan Community Hospital Saturday. She was born October 7, 1887 in Carson City.

Funeral services will be from the Stinson Funeral Rome with Rev. Robert Smith officiating and interment will be in the Union cemetery.

Mrs. Wood is survived by her husband, Jesse, and her children Lloyd of Weidman, Harold of Dimondale, Raymond of Shepherd, Eugene of Mulliken, Irvin and Robert of Lansing,, and Mrs. Hazel Palmer of Winn. She is survived by 19 grandchildren, 2P great grandchildren and one brother Donald Urie of Weidman.
 
 

Mrs. George (Martha) Goffnett, 70, of Shepherd, died atCarson City hospital Friday afternoon after a long illness.

Numeral services will be held from Garber Funeral Home in Shepherd, and at Delo Church near Winn. Burial will be in Union cemetery.

Born Martha Earl in Ohio on Nov. 16, 1879, she married George Goffnett who survives, besides a daughter, Mrs Freeman Curtis of Blanchard.

William Courser, 82, a lifelong resident of Isabella county, and a well known farmer the Blanchard area, died Thursday at in Billings Convalescent Home in Millbrook. Mr. Courser was born January 7, 1877 in Isabella county and is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Dale Walker of Detroit.

Funeral services will be held at Pine River Methodist Church near Blanchard, Rev. Elmer Faust officiating and interment will be at Pine River cemetery.

Mr. Curtiss was born in Eaton county Nov. 29, 1891, and lived much of his life in the Winn area where he had several businesses. He also worked for Dow at one time.

Funeral services will be at Garber Funeral Home in Shepherd with Rev. Newton Huffine officiating. Interment will be in Salt River cemetery.

Grant 0. Curtiss is survived by his wife, Luella, and twin sons, William R. of Mt. Pleasant and Edward R. of Shepherd, and three grandchildren.
 
 

Mrs. Mamie M. Whitehead, 75, Route 3, Union township, died Saturday, Nov. 30, in Central Michigan Community Hospital.

She is survived by four sons, Wayne and Dale of Mt. Pleasant, Keith of Beloit, Wisconsin, and Frank of Jackson, 13 grandchildren, 1 great grandchildren, three brothers, Roy Moss of Mt. Pleasant, and John and Milan Moss of Blanchard, and one sister, Mrs. Marguerite Woodard of Sanford.

Lela (Dean) Ardner, 79, of rural Shepherd died Friday, Nov. 22, at Gratiot Community Hospital. She was born Oct. 20, l889, in Midland county. Mrs. Ardner was a member of the Gleaners.

Surviving are two sons, William Ardner of Vestaburg and Russell Ardner of Alma, one sister, Alma Burlingame of St. Louis, one brother, Roy Dean of Flint, and four grandchildren.
 
 

Inez Leighton, 85, of Blanchard, died Saturday, August 2, at Isabella county Medical Care Facility.

She was born Jan. 24, I884, in Shepherd, and is survived by nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be at Crittenden Funeral Home in Remus, and burial will be in Blanchard cemetery.

Mrs. Sabra Elthes Davis, 99, died Monday at the Golden Acres Rest Home in St. Louis, where she had been a patient for one week.

Funeral services will be held at 3 PM at the Winn Methodist church. She will lie in state at the church from 2 to 3 p.m. Thursday. John Butts will officiate at the services. Interment will be in the Union cemetery.

Surviving are three sons, Lial Gifford of St. Johns, Floyd Gifford of Mt. Pleasant and Thelo Gifford of Winn, 8 grandchildren , 22 great grandchildren and 15 great great grandchildren.

Edward Derlow, 77, of 1032 S. Arnold, Mt, Pleasant died June 22 in Central Michigan Community Hospital.

He was born on a farm in Fremont township Isabella county, Jan. 30, 1883, and lived 49 years in Mt. Pleasant.

Edith E. Southard, 82, of Shepherd, died April 24, at the Isabella County Medical Facility.

She was born July 12, 1887, in Isabella county. Her husband, Joseph, died in 1961.

She was a member of the White Shrine of Jerusalem, the Eastern Star, the Rebeccas, and the Westlawn Church of Christ.

Services will be held Monday, April 27, at the Garber Funeral Home in Shepherd, with Rev. Ben Baumgardner officiating. Burial will be in Salt River cemetery.

Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Preston (Agnes) McElveen of Georgia and Mrs. Violet Kindig of Shepherd, three grandchildren and six great grandchildren.
 
 
 

John Albert Curtiss, a farmer of rural Blanchard, died October 20, at Central Michigan Community Hospital after a short illness. He was born in the state of New York June 16, 1878, and came to this area when he was twelve years of age.

Funeral services will be held Oct. 23, at the Winn Methodist church, arrangements by Stinson of Mt. Pleasant. Rev. Edson Vane will officiate.

Surviving are his wife, Martha, two zone, Howard and Harold of Winn, a daughter, Mrs. Ruth Barker of Lansing, 9 grandchildren 16 great grandchildren, 2 brothers, Norman and William. of Winn and one sister, Mrs. Mary Poster all of Winn.

Kelsey Memorial Hosp. in Lakeview.

She is survived by 5 sons, Leo, Vurnell, Norval, Ralph and Harry of Winn; 2 daughters Mrs. Mildred Mayer of Blanchard, and Mrs. Lucile Towne of Winn; 1 sister, Mrs. Marie Urie of Weidman; 24 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren.

Mrs. Louise Barbara McNutt, 88, of Winn died Friday May 10 Broomfield Memorial Hospital where she had been a patient for approximately one year. She had been ill for two years.

Mrs. McNutt was born in Washtenaw County on Oct. 28, 1874 and had been a resident of Isabella County for 60 years. She was a member of the Winn Methodist Churche

Stewart D. Curtiss, 78, vice-president of the Shepherd State Bank and director of Klein Fertilizer Co. of Shepherd, died at Ford Hospital in Detroit after a six weeks illness.

Mrs. Curtiss was born Oct 7, 1889, in Isabella county, and was a retired farmer and Past Noble Grand in the Oddfellows Lodge.

Surviving is his widow, Elvy, one son, Arlo of Shepherd, four grandchildren, and one brother, James, of Shepherd.

Mrs. Hattie Demlow, 82, died Sunday at Michigan Christian Home in Grand Rapids.

She was born September 12, 1885, in Isabella county and lived for 50 years on South Arnold St. in Mt. Pleasant before moving to Grand Rapids.

Funeral services will be Wednesday from Stinson Funeral Home with burial in Union cemetery. Mr. Chester Walther, pastor of the Church of Christ will officiate.

Surviving are two sons, John Demlow of Royal Oak and Richard Denmlow of Traverse City, and three grandchildren.
 
 

Sadie Baker Lowe of Winn died yesterday at Broomfield Hospital where she has lived for the past 1 ½ years. Funeral services will be held in the Stinson Funeral Home Wed. at 2 p.m. and burial will be in Union Cemetery.

Mrs. Baker Lowe was born Dec. 13, l868 in East Gilead, Mich., and made her home in Winn for the past 70 years. She was a member of the Winn Methodist Church and of the Winn Chapter #377 of the order of the Eastern Star.

Surviving are: daughters Mrs. Lucy Renaburger of Winn and Mrs. May Munn of Flint; sons Glen Lowe of Winn and Ray Lowe of Indian River; 1 grandson and 2 great grandchildren.

Mrs. Mary E. Lint, 78s of Roseville died August 7 at the Gratiot Community Hospital after a very brief illness. She was born Jan. 6, l882 in Fremont township, Isabella County and lived on a farm near Winn until 1940.

Queena Odessa Lint was born June 22, 1884 in Fremont Twp. She died Jan. 27, 1963 at the age of 78 years, 7 months and 4 days, She was married to Clyde Lint Sept. 1903. To this union was born 5 sons, Vervie, Clare, Angus, Stanford and Les. She lived most of her life in Fremont and Rolland Twps. She was a life member of Winn Chapter #377 Order of the Eastern Star.

Preceding her in death was her husband, Clyde, on August 20, 1961, her son, Vervie, on April 28, 1962, also a grandson Clydie, May 28, 1941.

She leaves to mourn, her 4 sons, Clare, Angus, Stanford and Leslie, all of Blanchard. One granddaughter Dawn, 4 grandsons, Lonnie, Terry, James and Louis. Also, 3 brothers, Alvia Delo of Blanchard, Bainey Delo of St. Clair Shores, Ray Delo of St. Louis and 1 sister, Reka Slates of Alma. Many nieces and nephews, and a hoet of relatives and friends. She will be sadly missed by all who knew her.

Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Billie Kennedy at the Delo church Wednesday Jan. 27, at 2 o'clock.

James Leo O'Grady, 75, of Isabella Twsp., died Friday, Oct. 6, at CMCH.

Mr. O'Grady, was born Jan. 13, 1886 in Vernon Twp., where he had been a resident all his life.

Funeral services for William Henry Oberly, 8O, resident of Winn, will be held on Thursday at 2 p.m. at the Stinson Funeral Home, conducted by the Rev. James Schottle, pastor of the Methodist church. Burial will be at Union cemetery at Winn.

Mrs. Oberly died Tuesday morning at the Lakeview Hospital after an illness of two weeks.

Born Jan. 25, 1875, in Illinois, Mr. Oberly had been a resident of the area for the past 50 years.

Emma Malish, Rte 2, Shepherd, died Friday, Oct. 16 at CMCH where she had been a patient for 3 days.

She was born on Aug. 8, 1881 in Germany and had been a resident of the Mt. Pleasant area for 55 years.

He was united in marriage with Lilly Larsen in 1911. To them was born a son, Richard and a daughter Eleanor.

Samuel Master was born in Henry county, Ohio, July 15, 1877, and departed this life Feb. 18, 1963- He had been a resident of Isabelle county and Blanchard the past 77 years.

He was united in marriage April 5, 1900, to Elnore Bundy and to this union were born a daughter who preceded him in death and a son, Melvin of Route 1, Remus.

Mr. Master was a faithful member of the Wesleyan Methodist church for the past 57 years.

She was born Dec. 22, 1884, in Lincoln Township, Isabella County. Her family were early pioneers who helped settle this area. She and her husband, owned one of the first sawmills.

Funeral services will be Tuesday, May 7, at 2 p.m. at the Stinson Funeral Home, Rev. Daren Durey officiating. Burial will be at Riverside Cemetery.

Lottie Bella Varnum, Rte 3, Union Twonship, died Friday April 29 at the CMCH.

She was born on Aug. 26, 1893 in Isabella County and was a life long resident here.

Funeral services were held today at the Stinson Funeral Rome at 2 p.m. Officiating was Mr. Chester Walther, minister of the First Church of Christ, where Mrs. Varnum was a member. Burial was in the Salt River Cemetery in Shepherd.

Mr. Whitney died June 19, at Pleasant Manor Nursing Home after a four year illness. Burial will be in Taylor Cemetery, Isabella county.

Oliver Wyant, 90, of Nashville, Mich., former resident of Winn, died Monday at his home.

He was born in Isabella county on Septenib6r 22, 1877. He was a retired farmer and had lived most of his life in the county until a year ago when he moved to Nashville.

Funeral services will be held at the Stinson Funeral Home and burial will be in Union cemetery near Winn. Rev. Alton Finney will officials.

Mr. Wyant is survived by two children, a daughter, Mrs. Wayne Ward and a son, Gus Wyant, both of Nashville. Also surviving is a sister, Mrs. Violet Fox of Pontiac and nine grandchildren.
 
 

Earl Houghton, 87, of Blanchard, died at his home Tuesday, April 16. He had been a resident of Blanchard for 75 years and was employed at the Blanchard School for 23 years.

S/Sgt John Allen Howe, 24, of Co. P lst Bat Sec Inf, let Inf Div., U.S. Army, was killed on Nov. 14, while on a military mission in the Republic of Vietnam.

He was born April 4, 1945, and was a graduate of Reed City High School and University of Michigan and had enrolled in the University of Michigan Law School before his induction.

He is survivied by his father and step-mother, Mr. and Mrs. Allen Howe of Reed City, his step-father, Fred Cochran of Shepherd, two sisters, Mrs. Thomas (Emma) Curtiss of Winn and Mrs. Marvin Jensen of McBride, one brother, Dennis, of Reed City, his maternal grandmother, Mrs. Inez Baker of Galesburg, Illinois, and his paternal grandmother, Mrs. Odessa Howe of Oblong, Illinois. His mother, Mrs. Isabella Cochran, preceded him in death in 1956.

Mabel Curtiss, Route 3, Mt. Pleasant, died at Central Mich. Community Hospital Feb. 23, after a three week illness. A 1ife resident of the area, Mrs. Curtiss was born in Fremont township January 29, 1884.

Frank C. Riggle, R #3, Mt. Pleasant, died Nov. 25, at his home in Winn.

He was born July 29, 188O in Winn and was a lifelong resident there. He was a retired farmer and a member of the Winn Masonic Order, the Modern Woodsmen and the Winn Methodist Church.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 2 p.m. in the Winn Methodist Church with interment in Union Cemetery. Rev. Chas. McNary will officiate.

Mrs. Arley Renwick, rural Blanchard resident, passed away this morning at the age of 61 in Ferguson Hospital, Grand Rapids.

Born Nov. 16, 1898 she had been a lifelong resident of Isabella County. She was preceded in death by her husband, Howard, Jan. 24, of this year.

She is survived by one son Jack of Midland; 2 sisters, Mrs. Ida McAllister of Detroit and Mrs. Ethel Heckert of Winn; and 2 brothers, John Hey of Lansing and Otto Hey of Phoenix, Arizona.

Pleasant shortly after his birth and farmed for many years the Evergreen Farm, now the site of Hotel Chieftain. Mr. Southwick left the farm at the turn of the century and had lived in Ohio since that time a frequent visitor to Mt. Pleasant, he was well known by many of the residents. He was a partner in the Rubber Sundries Co., a wholesale drug sundries business in Cleveland for 50 years.

His wife Alice died in 1952.

He is survived by his son John A. of Last Claridon, Ohio, 2 grandchildren and a niece Sarah May Bruder of Midland, who is now residing in Florida.
 
 

Elizabeth Stamm, 92, Blanchard, Rte 1, passed away at the Edmore hospital, Tues., Aug. 28, 1962.

Mrs. Stamm was born in Switzerland Aug. 4, 1870.

Surviving are 3 sons Jake and John of Blanchard and Tom of Saginaw; one daughter Mrs. Clarence Morris of Taylor, Mich; 3 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild; 3 2 brothers George Hubscher of Mt. Pleasant and Godfrey Hubscher of Ithaca; 1 sister Mrs. Louis Colbry of St. Louis, besides many other relatives and a host of friends.

Funeral services at Stebbins Funeral Home in Edmore at 2:00 p.m. Aug. 31, The Rev. Billie Kennedy of Blanchard officiating. Interment was in the Pine River Cemetery. Pall-bearers were: Clarence Malish, Wayne Miller, Lewis Wood, Donald Ellsworth, Will Snyder and Paul Hubschere .
 

Earl Swayze, 74, Rte 1, Blanchard died Tuesday in the Edmore hospital.

He was born Aug. 20, 1887 in Blanchard and was a rural mail carrier in Blanchard for 47 years retiring in 1957. He was a life member of the Masonic Lodge 487 in Blanchard, a life member of the Eastern Star Chapter 445 in Blanchard, a member of the White Shrine of Alma, a member of tie Mecosta County Rural Mail Carrier's Association and a member of the Pine Grove Form Bureau.

Funeral services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. with Rev. Billie Kennedy officiating. Interment will be in Pine River Cemetery in Blanchard.

Surviving are his wife Florence; 3 daughters, Mrs. Augusta Livingway and Miss Ruth Swayze both of Detroit and Mrs. Arlene Case of Litchfield; 5 grandchildren.
 
 

Mrs. Reva Taylor, 57, of Route 1, Blanchard, died Sunday, Mar. 11 in Kelsey Hospital at Lakeview. She had been ill for about one month.

Mrs. Taylor was born April 22, 1904 in Rolland Township and was a lifelong resident of Isabella County and a member of the Pine River W.S.C.

Surviving are her husband, Alson; 1 son Richard of Blanchard; 3 daughters Mrs. Richard JeLLen and Mrs. Lyle Walkington of Blanchard and Mrs. Richard Root of DeWitt; 2 brothers Kenneth Dush of Blanchard and Clarence Dush of Lakeview; 9 grand children; 1 great grandchild.

Funeral services will be held Wed. at 2 pm at the Crittenden Funeral Home in Remus, with interment in the Pine River Cemetery near Blanchard.
 
 

Frank Thatcher, Rte 3, Fremont Twp., died last night, Jan. 3 in the Gratiot Community Hospital in Alma, after a week's illness.

Mr. Thatcher was born Mar. 11, 1884 in Isabella County and had lived here all his life. He was a retired farmer.

Funeral services will be held Sunday, Jan. 6 from the Stinson Funeral Home at 2 p.m. with Rev. Charles McNary officiating. Interment will be in Union Cemetery.

Surviving Mr. Thatcher are 3 brothers Vern, Fred and Loren Thatcher, all of Mt. Pleasant; 3 sisters Mrs. Maude Heath of Pontiac, Mrs. Nina Turner of Saginaw and Mrs. Maria Lawrence of Romulus; 10 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren.
 
 

Don S. Uebele, eon of John A. and Alice Uebele, was born Feb. 9, 1901 at Blanchard Mich and died Dec. 1, 1964 at Mt. Pleasant Community Hospital.

He was united in marriage to Beatrice Stout on June 14, 1927.

Surviving are the wife, Beatrice; 1 son Gerald Don and 2 daughters Mrs. Venila Quackenbush and Mrs. Saralee Slusher; 4 grandsons Dennis, Alari, Mark and Karl Don; and 1 sister Jennie Curtiss of Mesa, Ariz.

Funeral services were Dec. 4 at the Crittenden Funeral Home in Remus with Rev. Mervit. Iseminger officiating, with interment Pine River cemetery.
 
 

At the age of 85, James Welch, of rural Blanchard died Monday, Mar. 22 at the Edmore Hospital. He was born Feb. 10, 1880, in Wheatland Twp. in Remus.

The Rev. James Schoettle will officiate for the funeral to be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Crittenden Funeral Home in Remus. Intermient will be in the Decker Cemetery in Millbrook.

He is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Hazel Fountain of Blanchard, a brother William of Remus, 2 grandchildren and one great grandchild.
 
 

Beulah Adel Curtiss of Winn, daughter of Edward and Frances Curtiss, died Oct. 13. She was born in, Eaton county, July 27, 1886, and died at the age of 72 year., 2 months and 16 days.

She was the wife of the late James C. Curtiss, who preceded her in death on July 30, 1950. To this union were born five sons and three daughters. One son, Leland, died in 1943.

She spent 64 years of her life in the Winn community and was a life member of the Winn Order of the Eastern Star #377, and had served as Worthy Matron of that organization.

She leaves to mourn their lose her children, Freeman of rural Blanchard, Glenn and Donald of Winn, Marion of Shepherd, Mrs. Marguerite Pall of Kalamazoo, Mrs. Marjorie Coats of Mt. Pleasant, and Mrs. Patricia Forquer of Winn,24 grand-children and 5 great grandchildren.
 
 
 

Freeman Fay Curtiss, 63, of Winn, died Monday, May 12, of injuries resulting from a tractor accident.

He is survived by his wife, Lillie, one son, James Freeman Curtiss of Whittier, Calif. and one daughter, Mrs. Larry (Joann) DeVeuyst of Saginaw, 5 grandchildren, 3 sisters, Mrs. Marguerita Dush of Blanchard and Mrs. Patricia Forquer, Marjorie Coats both of Winn, three brothers, Marion of Shepherd and Glenn and Donald both of Winn.

Funeral services will be held May 15, at Stinson Funeral Home, Rev. Eldon C. Schram officiating. Burial will be in Union cemetery.
 
 

Mrs. Pearl 0. Curtiss, 78, of Winn, died early this morning Nov. 17, at Sheridan Community Hospital where she had been a patient for the past seven days.

A native of Fremont township, Mrs. Curtiss was born Sept. 23, 1886, and resided in this area most of her life, except ten years spent in New York.

Services will be at Winn Methodist church, arranged by Stinson Funeral Home, and interment in Union cemetery.

Mrs. Curtis is survived by her husband, Dwight, two sons, Bernard of Erie, Pa., and Kenneth of Yorktown, New York, two daughters, Leona Seiler of Mt. Pleasant and Agnes Curtiss of Blanchard, two sisters, Mrs. Hazel Morey of Winn and Marie Urie of Coldwater Lake, ten grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

Raymond A. Slates, 75, of Alma, died Monday in an Alma nursing home.

He was employed by Consumers Power Co. for 34 years, and was a Past Master of the Shepherd Masonic Lodge.

Surviving are his wife, Reka, a son, Raymond, of Holt, a step-son, James H. Redman of Chicago, a brother, Rev. Ben P. Slates of Fenton, four grandchildren and four great grandchildren and seven step-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at the United Methodist Church of Alma, with burial at Riverside cemetery.
 
 

Mrs. Julia R. Bryant, 72, of Shepherd, died October 17, at Central Michigan Community Hospital.

She was born Jan. 26, 1897, in Secor, Ohio, and was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, Women's Club and Women’s Society for Christian Service.

She is survived by two sons, Lyle of Shepherd, and Ora of Chehalis, Washington, one sister, Mrs. Charles (Alma) Wilson of Mt. Pleasant and four grandchildren.
 
 

Mrs. Erma Cullimore, age 80, a lifetime resident of Winn, Mich., passed away Friday, Aug. 24, in Broomfield Hospital, Mt. Pleasant. She was born in Isabella county February 10, 1882.

She is survived by four sons, Cecil of Winn, Zealin and Kreaton of Lansing, end Cleo of Cudahy, Calif., one daughter, Mrs. Majial Denalow of Remus, 14 grandchildren, a brother Earl Holloway of Eaton Rapids, three sisters, Mrs. Rosie Martelle, Mrs. Nellie Weston, and Mrs. Bessie McCully of Lansing.

Services were held at Winn Methodist church in Winn, Aug. 26, by Rev. James W. Schoettle of the Remus Methodist church.

Burial was in Union cemetery.
 
 

John Carl (Jack) Miller, Rte 1, Shepherd, died Wednesday, Jan. 24, in CMCH.

He was born Jan. 21, 1902 in Pennsylvania and for 16 years he owned and operated Miller’s Superette on Coleman Rd., near Shepherd. He was a member of the Shepherd IOCF.

Funeral services will be held at the Crittenden Funeral Home Saturday at 2 p.m. with interment in Riverside Cemetery.

She wee born Jan. 21, l892, in Wood county, Ohio, came to Mt. Pleasant area as a child, and lived cost of her life in this area.

She was a member of the Coomer Methodist church and a life member of the Winn Order of Eastern Star.

She is survived by four daughter, Mrs. Earl (Mildred) Humes of Mt. Pleasant, Mrs. Robert (Irene) Fitzpatrick of Lansing, Mrs. A. R. (Maxine) Mizgaleki of Detroit, and Mrs. Ardith Krupa of Alexandria, Virginia, three sons, Don E. Turner of Chelsea, Glenn F. Turner of Northville, and Stanley Turner of Swartz Creek, two sisters, Mrs. James Cook of Bowling Green, Ohio, and Mrs. Bernard Smith of Shepherd, two brothers, Ford Whitney of Chelsea and Mearl Whitney of Mt. Plea&ant, and nine grandchildren.

She was born in Hammansburg, Ohio, and came to Michigan with her parents to settle in Deerfield township in 1884. She lived in the Winn area most of her life.

Her husband, Orval, preceded her in death June 19, 1968. She is survived by sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law and nieces and nephews.

Irene G. Judge, of R. 2, Shepherd, died Sunday, Dec. 25, at the Central Michigan Community Hospital. She was born on Dec. 20, 1911 in Lansing. Mrs. Judge graduated from St. Mary's High School in Lansing; and from St. Mary's School of Nursing in Grand Rapids.

Funeral services were held at 11 am on Wed., Dec, 28 in St. Leo’s Catholic Church in Winn, with burial in St. Leo’s Cemetery, the J.J. Rush Funeral Home of Mt. Pleasant was in charge of arrangements.

Melvin G. Hunt, 74, of 209 Chippewa in Shepherd, died Monday, Feb. 20 at Central Michigan Community Hospital.

Mr. Hunt was born Aug. 19, 1892 in Fremont Twp., Isabella County and was a retired construction engineer.

A veteran of World War I and II, Mr. Hunt was a charter member of the VFW Owen Barrett, Post 110, American Legion and Oddfellow Lodge 217, in Mt. Pleasant; Salt River Lodge 28F, F & AM; the Bureau of Indian Affairs and the Shepherd Methodist Church.

Funeral services will be held Friday, Feb. 24 at 2 p.m. from the Garber Funeral Home in Shepherd with the Rev. Lester Priest officiating. Burial will be in Union Cemetery.

Surviving is his wife, Vergaline; son S/Sgt Milo G. Hunt of Anchorage, Alaska; two daughters, Mrs. L.M. (LaVern Jean) Mikelson of Glenview, Ill. and Mrs. Willard (Elna Mae) Clemenson of Grangeville, Idaho; 8 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild.
 
 

Everett L. Houghton, of 425 South Lansing St., Mt. Pleasant died Monday, May 6, at Central Michigan Community Hospital.

He was born Feb. 7, 1901 in Isabella County and had been in the roofing business for 27 years. For the Past 3 years he had been employed in the maintenance department at Central Michigan Community Hospital.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 9 at 9:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church with interment in Calvary Cemetery. Rosary services will be held Wednesday, May 8 at 8 p.m. at the J.J. Rush Funeral Home,

With the death of Earl Houghton, this past week, Blanchard lost one of its oldest residents. Earl having lived here 79 years. He care to Blancharad at the age of 8 years.

In the early part of the 19^th century, Earl and Grace lived on what is now the Mrs. Ida Chaney farm. At that tine he held the office of Township Treasurer in Millbrook Township.

After the death of his mother, Mrs. Loren Houghton, the Earl Houghton family lived on in the Houghton home on Main Street, where Earl resided until his death April 16th, 1963.

In 1927 he accepted a position as custodian at the Blanchard Public School, a position he held until 1950 when he resigned. He was a good friend to teachers and students of the school and will long be remembered by them.

He loved to recall incidents of his former life since his retirement and could always make interesting conversation.

He also served in offices of Rolland Township during his residence here.
 
 

Melinda Ellen* daughter of Samuel and Martha Hagerman, was born in Eaton County, Feb. 13, 1853 and passed away Feb. 21, 1959 at the age of 101 years and eight days.

She was the oldest of four children all of whom preceded her in death.

July 3rd, 1876she war united in marriage to Cyrus Hoover who passed away April 28, 1943. To this union were born five children, three of whom died in infancy.

Surviving are one daughter Effie Wyant of Remus and a son Henry of Colon; a niece Zoa Strong whom she reared; 14 grand-children; 43 great grandchildren many nieces and nephews.

She was a member of the Church of God, Funeral services were held at Schirper Funeral Home at Colons with Rev. Leonard Steininger officiating. Interment was in the Matteson Lake Cemetery,
 
 

Lionel Richard "Grubb" Haight, Route Two, Mt. Pleasant, died Monday, Jan. 29 at Central Michigan Community Hospital where he had been a patient for nine days.

He was born in Michigan April 17, 1904 and had lived most of his life in the Mt. Pleasant area. He was employed as a rural mail carrier workings out of the Mt. Pleasant Post Office and was a member of the Wabon Lodge 305 F & AM and the Church of Christ.

Funeral Services will be held Wed. at 2 p.m. at the Stinson Funeral Rome with Rev. Terry Alverson officiating. Interment will be in Riverside Cemetery.

Bank President Succumbs Sunday

One of Blanchard's most prominent businessmen, Carl M. Mason, passed away at his home Sunday, Dec. 20, 1964, after a long, lingering illness. He was born on Dec. 13, 1883, the son of N.C. and Inger Christine Mason at Blanchard, Michigan.

He was a graduate of the local school, and upon graduation entered Central State Teachers College, however his father's business proved more alluring so he left college to join his father in business, Hardware, Farm Implements and later automobiles. He continued in this work with his father and later his younger brother, Peter G. Mason,

Upon his mother's death the property was divided and he left the garage and continued in the hardware business with his late sister, Frances Mason, and sister Helena Mason,

He was married to Ruby Kearney, who preceded him in death. In June 1955, he married Esther Lindeman who preceded him in death Jan. 25, 1964.

Mr. Mason was very active in Community Interests, he was a Life Member of the Masonic Order, the Eastern Star, Modern Woodman, Bay City Consistory, and for years a member of the Blanchard Rotary Club.

Upon reorganization of the Blanchard State Bank he became a Director and President of the Bank until his illness this fall.

Alva Almond Jones, 71, of Blanchard, died Feb. 26 in the Gratiot Community Hospital.

He was the former postmaster at Blanchard and later was a funeral director in the Blanchard area. He was born March 16, 1898 in Coleman.

Funeral services will be held Sat. Feb. 28, at 11 a.m. at St. Margaret's Catholic Church in Edmore. Burial will be at Blanchard. Father Bozung will officiate.

A rosary will be held at the family home at 8 p.m. Friday.

He is survived by his wife JoAnne; one daughter Mrs. Sally Mayes of Mt. Pleasant; one sister Florence Kemmer of Blanchard and 4 grandchildren.

Angus Raymond Lint was born Aug. 25, 1906 in Isabella Co., Michigan. He was the third eldest son of Clyde and Queena Lint. He was a lifelong resident of the county, being employed 41 years with Mason Motor Sales in Blanchard. He was married Feb. 13, 1938 to Maudi M. Shurlow. They made their home in Blanchard with their son Louis R, Lint. He was an active member of the Blanchard Church of God and looked forward to the return of Christ and the resurrection. He was a member of the Masonic Pleasant View Lodge 487, and actively supported the local Boy Scouts of America program. He died at his home at 11:30 p.m. on Jan. 29, 1970. Pastor Michael Mattin and Darrell Maddock officiated at the funeral service in the Crittenden Funeral Home, with interment in the Decker Cemetery.

Mrs. Chloe M. Wyart of R #1, Remus died Friday, July 3 at the Broomfield Memorial Hospital.

She was born September 12, l888 in Fremont Township, Isabella County and had been a lifelong resident.

Funeral services were held today, July 6, at the Stinson Funeral Home with Rev. Harry Holden officiating Interment was in Union Cemetery.

Mrs. Wyant is survived by 3 sons-Calvin Wyant of Rosebush, and Wilbur and Chester Wyant of Remus; 2 daughters Mrs. Clarence (Dorthy) Smith of Mt. Floyd H. Wood, 52, of Blanchard, road contractor and live-time resident of the Blanchard area died Sunday, Mar. 26, in the Tri-County Hospital in Edmore.

Mr. Wood was married in 1940 to Frances Sheets, who survives him.

Also surviving is one son, Roger J. Wood of Big Rapids; 3 daughters Mrs. Jack (Mary Ann) Andringa of Holland, Mrs. Larry (Judy) Hanson of Stanton and Miss Louise Wood at home; a -step daughter, Mrs. Donald Johnson of Cedar Springs; 2 sisters Mrs. Harry Behrend of Blanchard and Mrs. Lyle Bryant of Shepherd; and 3 grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Wed., Far. 210 at 10 a.m. from the Blanchard Church of God with the Rev. Billie Kennedy officiating. Burial will be in the Pine River Cemetery. The body will rest at the Stebbins Funeral Rome in Edmore until 9 a.m. on the day of the funeral.
 
 

Edna L. Cole died Wednesday, March 10, at Golden Acres Nursing Home in St. Louis. She was born May 24, l896, in Isebella county and had been a lifelong resident here. She was a member of the Eastern Star at Winn.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 13, at the Winn Methodist church with Rev. Dale Culver officiating and interment will be in Union cemetery.

Mrs. Cole is survived by one son, Veyne Williams of Rosebush and one brother Howard Riggle of Alma, three grand-children and three great grandchildren.
 
 

Everett Snider, 68, of S. Mission St., Mt. Pleasant, died in the Medical Care Facility after an illness of several months. He came to Mt. Pleasant from Newark, Ohio, in 1930.

Mr. Snider was born April 2, 1890, in Piddlebourne, West Virginia.

Joseph F. Southard, 76, a well known Shepherd area farmer, painter and decorator, died Saturday, December 16, at Tampa, Florida. He was born in Coe township June 8, 1885, and was a lifelong resident of the Shepherd area.

He was a life member of the Salt River Masonic Lodge, the Order of Eastern Star Chapter *9F, and Pt. Alma White Shrine of Jerusalem, #26.

He leaves his wife, Edith, two daughters, Mrs. Melvin Kindig of Shepherd and Mrs. Agnes Switzer of Griffin, Georgia, and a sister, Mrs. Alice Frise of Davison.

Orlow Krause of South Loomis Rd, Shepherd, died at his home after an illness of six months.

He was born on April 15, 1888, in Ohio, and had been a former lineman for Consumers Power Co.

Funeral services at Stinson Funeral Home, with Rev. Richard Youlls officiating. Interment was in Riverside Cemetery.

Survivors are two sons, Floyd of Bay City and Richard of Mt. Pleasant, 5 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren.
 
 

Clifford Jacob Ackerman, 55, a farmer and lifelong resident of this area, died Thursday, June 4, at Edmore hospital after an illness of one year.

He was born in Gratiot county, Nov. 25, 1908, and resided in Deerfield township, Isabella county.

Funeral services will be Sunday at the Stinson Funeral home with Rev Charles Mcl4ary of Winn officiating. Interment will be in the Taylor cemetery.

Surviving are his wife, Ellarina, his mother, Mrs. Clara Ackerman, two daughters, Mrs. George (Margaret) Carden, Jr. of France, and Carolyn at home, three sons, Jack and Kenneth of Chesaning and Donald at home, and one sister, Mrs. Gladys Taylor of Lansing.
 
 

James E. Allen of Mt. Pleasant died Thursday at Central Michigan Community Hospital. He was born on April 12, 1885, in Isabella county, and was a retired farmer and employee of Dow Chemical Co.

Funeral services will be at Sacred Heart Catholic Church before interment in Calvary cemetery.

Surviving are five sons, Woodrow, Charles, Harold and Francis of Mt. Pleasant and James of Midland, a daughter, Mrs. Eugene Thering of Mt. Pleasant, a sister, Mrs. Ona Beltinck, twenty-two grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.
 
 

Mrs. Nora Allen of Mt. Pleasant, died Dec. 20, at Central Michigan Community Hospital where she had been a patient for six days.

She was born in Isabella county on Dec. 7, 1883, and spent her entire life in this area.

Funeral services will be held at Sacred Heart Church with Monsignor Edward N. Alt officiating.

Surviving are husband, James, five sons, Woodrow, Charles, Harold and Francis of Mt. Pleasant, and James of Midland, one daughter, Mrs. Eugene Thering of Mt. Mr. Hayhoe was a member of the Winn Methodist church, the Winn Masonic Order and Winn OES.

Funeral services were held Sat., May 8th at the Stinson Funeral Rome in Mt. Pleasant with interment in the Union Cemetery east of Blanchard.

Linda Ann Morey, 19, Winn, died Friday, Dec. 13t in Blodgett Hospital in Grand Rapids.

Survivors include her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Vernell Morey, Winn; 4 brothers Jerry, John, -Thomas and William; 2 sisters, Ilene and Sharon, all at home.

Rosary services will be held at the J.J. Rush Funeral Home Monday, Dec. 16, at 8 p.m.

Miss Morey was a 1967 graduate of Shepherd High School and Lansing Business University. She was a member of Alpha Iota Sorority and a legal secretary for the Anderson-Green law firm in Lansing.

Mrs. Millie Cora Nicholson, 88, of 403 N. Adams died Sept. 8 at the home of her son Floyd. She had been ill about four months.

Mrs. Nicholson was born on October 24, l872 in Clinton County, Michigan and had been a resident of this county for about 70 years.

Funeral services were Sunday, September 10 at the Stinson Funeral Home. Interment will be in Two Rivers. Pastor Robert Kachenmeister will officiate. Mrs. Nicholson was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church.

Surviving are one son, Floyd, of Mt. Pleasant; a daughter, Mrs. Allen Courser of Blanchard; nine grandchildren; 29 great grandchildren and one great great granddaughter.

Robert Dale Lentz of R 1, East Lansing, died Thursday, April 12 at the Lansing General Hospital. He was born Jan. 11, 1912 in Isabella County and was the farm manager of the conservation dept. in Lansing.

Mrs. Francis A. Lecronier, 63, wife of Russell Lecronier, 1434 N. Mission Rd., died unexpectedly last night at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Orton Simons, 812 S. College. The Lecroniers were visiting the Simons at the time.

Mrs. Lecronier, whose husband served as Superintendent of Schools in Mt. Pleasant for 16 years, was born Aug. 31, 1904 in Senalas Co. The Lecroniers have lived here since 1948.

Funeral services will be held from St. John's Episcopal Church Monday, April 24 at 11 am with Father John Goodrow officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Gardens.

Mrs. Nina Myrtle Kindg, 84, of Shepherd died Oct. 14 in the Schnepp Convalescent Home in St. Louis, Mich. She was born in Benson, Woodford County, Ill. on July 1, 1882. She had been a member of the Orchard Avenue Church of Christ in Shepherd and was the wife of the late Cecil Kindig.

Surviving Mrs. Kindig are one daughter, Mrs. Sylvia Slater of Sanford; one son Arlie Kindig of Shepherd; 7 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; 3 sisters, Mrs. Nora Marsh of Kingsford Heights, Ind. and one brother, William 0. Bryant of Shepherd.

Funeral services will be held on Wednesday April 17 at 2:00 p.n. in the Beebe Funeral Home in Ithaca with Rev. Audley Freed officiating. Interment will be in the North Star Cemetery.

Mrs. John Donald Houghton, Jr., 75, of Deerfield township, died Wednesday at the family residence after an illness of 15 months. She was born in Winn on August 2, 1892, and had lived in Deerfield township, for 30 years. She worked at Ferro’s for 15 years until she retired at age 65. She was a member of the Deerfield Methodist Church and Winn Order of Eastern Star.

Funeral services will be held from Stinson Funeral Home with Rev. Arlo Varidlen officiating. Interment will be in Riverside cemetery.

Surviving are her husband, John Donald Houghton, and the children, Mrs. Roy (Eleanor) Nelson, John Donald (Jack) Houghton, Jr, L. Mrs. Pierpont, 76, died on Fri. evening at the home of her nephew, Carl Peacock, in Fremont Twp., after an illness of 3 weeks, due to a heart condition. The body will be at Stinson Funeral Hom until time for the services.

Born Feb. 4, 1877 at Springfort, Mrs. Pierpont, was a resident of Winn the past 60 years. Her husband Wilbur Pierpont died in 1933. She was a member of the OES and Methodist Church at Winn.

She was born Dec. 5, 1894 in Fremont Twp., Isabella Co. and lived most of her adult life in Cleveland, Ohio, where she was a secretary for a rental agency. She came back to Michigan one year ago. She was a member of OES #377-

Kirk Nathan Parker, 78, of rural Blanchard, passed away November 5th in the Osteopathic Hospital in Grand Rapids after suffering a stroke a week ago.

He was born July 22, 1888 in Holland, Ohio, to Nathan and Amy Parker. Mr. Parker was a veteran of World War I.

On April 18th, 1925 he was united in marriage to Ethel Lint, who preceded him in death Jan. 18, 1956. To this union two daughters were born. Ina Shurlow and Angeline Griffith, both of Shepherd.

Surviving besides his daughters are three grandchildren, Jimmy Shurlow of Haslett, Joann Tracey and Larry Bellingar of Blanchard; also two step grandsons, Pvt. Gaylord Griffith, Fort Knox, Ky., and William Griffith of Blanchard; Two great granddaughters Robin Kay Shurlow of Haslett and Lesa Marie Tracey of Blanchard; one brother, Ralph of Lansing, nieces and nephews and many friends.

Funeral services were held Nov. 8th at the Crittenden Funeral Home in Remus with Rev. Billie Kennedy officiating. Interment was in the Pine River cemetery.

Eighty-seven-year old Mrs. Clyde Lyon, the former Alfretta Parks, of Shepherd, could probably work rings around the modern homemaker of today, because she has made a life study of it, by being very active day in and day out in her home.

She married Clyde Lyon in 1906 and has lived all her life in Isabella County, 59 years at her prevent address 1539 E. River Rd. When she was first married, she traveled with her husband, who had a sawmill and during the summer months, they lived in tents. Mr. Lyon passed on in May 1970.

All of Mrs. Lyon's nine children were born at home. In fact, she has never been in a hospital. Her children are: Mrs. Burdette O'Connor, Wayne Lyon, Mae Lawler, Alice Harris, Fenton Lyon and Robert Lyon, all of Mount Pleasant; Marge Cook and Evelyn Pitts, both of Alma and Eleanore Eldred of Blanchard.

She has close to 100 grandchildren and many great grandchildren When her daughters were young, she taught them how to cook, sew and keep house.

Today, Grandma Lyon, as she is known by her many friends, still grows her own vegetables, which she freezes, and has canned over 150 quarts of fruit, tomato juice and apple juice this year. She also makes her own Jams and Jellies and bakes bread at least once a week.

Every year she has a flower garden and has taught many a boy and girl how to raise flowers, grow vegetables, even sew and crochet.

One of her favorite past-times is making stuffed toys for her family and for children of her friends. She embroidered nine pairs of pillow slips this year for her daughters and daughters-in-law. She makes aprons, etc. for gifts especially at Christmas and even makes some of her own dresses.

Grandma Lyon is a member of the Trinity United Methodist Church and has been active in church circles. Now she attends church when the weather is good, goes shopping and attends the Senior Citizen Hospitality Corner about once a month.

According to her family, she keeps up with world affairs by reading the Detroit Free Press daily.

During the years her children were growing up, it wasn't always possible to buy new clothes, but this didn't prevent them from having new things when needed. Out came the sewing machine and many a night, Grandma Lyon burned the midnight oil,while she patiently and diligently went about the task of making new and attractive clothes to fit the changing sizes or to meet the changing seasons.

That same sewing machine is the one she uses today to make her stuffed toys and aprons and other things.

When her children were little, Grandma Lyon was never to busy to go to the woods with them and in later years it was the neighbor’s children. On a warm spring day off they’d go to gather wild flowers, or to look for rare stones or just enjoy some of the birds or stop for a moment to listen to the babbling brook.

When they arrived back to the house, there was always and still is, a plate of fresh homemade cookies or a slice of homemade bread and strawberry jam and a glass of milk waiting for them.

In a time of need, sickness, or death no one hesitated to call on Grandma Lyon for comfort. She always seemed to know the right thing to say and do and never thought of her own anxieties but always lent a helping hand, no matter how difficult the task.

Grandma Lyon is visited often by her grandchildren, and has often expressed her love for young people. She enjoys reasonably good health and manages to attend the family reunion held once a year.

This fine, gentle woman, has no doubt, enriched the lives of those who have come in contact with her over the years. Grandma Lyon is truly a legend in her own time.
