According to Rose Neighborhood Sketches, Wayne Co. NY; William purchased a farm in Butler part number 7. He later bought land from Jackson Harper.

The following article appeared in the Isabella Co. Portrait & Biographical Library (published in 1884).

William Whitehead, farmer owns the east half of the southwest quarter of section 30, in Union Township. He is the son of Richard and Mary (Fuller) Whitehead, and was born in Cambridgeshire, England, May 13, 1816. He was reared on a farm, and has followed agriculture and masonry ever since.

Coming to this country in 1851, he owned different farms in Wayne Co. NY, where he also followed his trade until 1869. He then came to Union Township, this county, having bought 80 acres of timberland in October previous. He has cleared 40 acres. Mr. W. is now suffering from impaired health. He was first married in Spaulding, Lincolnshire, England, May 17, 1841, to Elizabeth Bartee, a native of England, of this marriage nine children were born, seven of whom are living-Mary A., Jane, Charles R., George W., Matilda, Franklin B. and Stella. The deceased were infants. Losing his wife by death in the State of New York, October 07, 1861, he again married in Rose Valley, Wayne Co. NY, January 26, 1865, Mrs. Ann Reed, Widow of John Reed, who was killed at the first battle of Bull Run. Carrie A., William and Joseph are the names of the three children born of Mr. W's second marriage. He and his wife are members of the Episcopal Church.

The 1879 Union Twp. Plat shows Wm Whitehead owning a lot in # 30. In 1915 His son George Whitehead is shown as the owner. In 1931 George's son Alfred Whitehead is shown as the owner. Alfred is also the owner of George's property in Section 29

William is listed in the 1860 Savannah, Wayne Co. NY census. He then appears in the 1870 & 1880 Union Twp. Isabella Co. MI census.

WHITEHEAD FARM

William Whitehead came to Isabella County in1869.  He bought 80 acres of timbered land in Section 30, Union Township, of which he cleared 40 acres.  William was born in Cambridgeshire, England, May 13, 1816, and came to the United States in 1851.  He owned farms in Wayne County, New York before coming to Isabella County.  He was a farmer and mason by trade.

William Whitehead was first married to Elizabeth Bartee in Spaulding, Lincolnshire England in May 1841.  Nine children were born to this marriage, with seven living.  They were Mary, Jane, Charles R., George W., Matilda, Franklin B., and Stella.  After his first wife died in 1861, he married a widow, Ann Reed.  Three children were born to this marriage, William and Joseph, both died at a very early age and Carrie, who later married Noble Moss.

William's son, George W., followed in his father's profession and in 1876 bought a farm of 70 acres in Section 29 of Union Township.  He married Stella (should be Sarah) Lockwood and had two sons, Edward and Earnest.  Upon her death he married Florence Hoover, a teacher at the Gulick School.  They had four children, Rdella, Alfred, Gretchen and Vesta.  Rdella and Gretchen never married.  Vesta married Myron Stebbins and had two sons, Alfred and George.  They later divorced and she married Arthur Ash and had four children, Marjory (Cheetham), Maxine (Grove), Marie (Heath) and Stanley.

Alfred graduated from Mt. Pleasant High School and went to Central Michigan Normal for several terms.  He then took over the family farm.  Along with farming he also worked at the Isabella Sugar Company and served many years on the Union Township Board as trustee and treasurer.

Alfred was married to Mamie Moss on February 5, 1918.  They had four living children, A. Keith, Dale, Wayne and Franklin.  Alfred died in June 1940.

After military service, Keith married and settled in Beloit, Wisconsin.  Dale married Faye Bennett and lives in Mt. Pleasant; Franklin married Diane Percha and lives in Warsaw, Indiana.  Wayne after military service, returned to the family farm.  He enlarged the farm to lands in Section 19, 29, and 30 of Union Township.  He has also driven school bus for the Mt. Pleasant Public Schools for 34 years.  He married Elva Kranzo on March 20, 1949.  She teaches school in the Mt. Pleasant Public Schools.  They have four sons.  David, the oldest, married Marilyn Dumon and has two children, Nick and Carrie.  He works at Morbark Industries of Winn and helps out on the family farm.  Dean is a police officer in Lansing, Michigan.  William is a teacher and also works on the farm.  Robert is an x-ray technician supervisor in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.

With the present interest in farming by the generations living on this farm, it appears that the Whitehead Farm will continue as a growing entity for at least another generation.

William Whitehead died Tuesday at the advanced age of 74 years and 6 months.  he was one of the early settlers of this county, having lived here over twenty-two years and was a respected and honored citizen.  In his earlier years, he was a member of the Church of England and his request was that his funeral service might be the form of that church.  He was born, raised and married in England and with his family, wife and three children, came to New York state nearly fifty years ago.  There four other children were born.  Twenty-two years after his arrival from England, the wife and mother died, and a few years after with five of his seven children, he came to this county, having married the present Mrs. Whitehead before starting.  One child resulted from this marriage and six of his children, George and Frank, Mrs. Chas Slater, Mrs. Henry Ellsworth, Carrie and Susie still live here.  The esteem in which Mr. Whitehead was held among his children was fully demonstrated by their faithful and untiring efforts to make his last days as comfortable as possible.  No word was left unspoken or act undone by any of them whereby they could cheer him to the time of his death.  The funeral, conducted by Rev. E. L. Kellong, was held Thursday attended by a large number of his friends and relatives and the interment was at Riverside cemetery.

Residence at the time of marriage to Anna Reed was Rose, Wayne Co. NY. They were married in the Presbyterian Church. Mr. Young his wife and daughter were witnesses.

A search of Isabella County Probate records indicates that there was no will left.

Old Resident of Union Gone

Mrs. William Whitehead of Union died the evening of February first, aged 80 years, 9 months and 14 days.  She was widowed in December, 1891 and remained on the old farm with her daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. George Hoop, until her death.  She had been in feeble state of health for several years.  Mr. and Mrs. Whitehead were residents of the county forty years ago and were numbered among the substantial farmers of the place.  Two daughters survive their mother, Mrs. Susie Hoop and Mrs. Carrie Moss.

The funeral was held at the home Wednesday at 1 p. m., conducted by Rev. J. A. McGreaham of Mt. Pleasant, interment in Riverside beside her husband and two children, who preceded her.

George F. Hoop, a Union township farmer, died at his home Saturday, February 5, age 51 (should say 61) years.

 Besides his wife, he leaves several brothers and sisters to mourn his loss.

 Funeral services were held from the home, yesterday afternoon, in charge of Rev. Joseph H. Green with interment in Riverside cemetery.

 Deceased was a member of the I. O. O. F. and a number of the order attended the services, in a body.

FRANKLIN M. NICHOLS.

     Wolcott. Jan. 13, - Franklin M. Nichols died in the Hospital of the Good Shepherd at Syracuse January 12, where he had been a patient since Friday of last week with pneumonia. He was seventy-two years of age.  Mr. Nichols resided in Wolcott for many years. He was a member of the Masonic and Odd Fellows lodges here and was also a member of the Keeslar Post, G. A. R. of Wolcott. He served in the Civil War for about three years being a private of the 111th Regiment. He was a carpenter and builder and had much to do with the building of this village.  He leaves a son, Charles Nichols, a prominent contractor, who resides in Webster, N. Y.

INTERESTING ITEMS GATHERED AT ROSE

     The death of Mrs. Cornelius A. Marsh occurred Sunday evening, May 7, at about (?).  Mrs. Marsh had been ill of hardening of the arteries for several years and had been in Clifton Springs and Geneva Sanitariums, where she received only temporary relief.  The Monday preceding her death she fell into a coma, from which she never rallied.  She would have been 70 years of age had she lived one day longer.  Mrs. Marsh was born in Lincolnshire, England and came to this country when only 7 years of age with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Whitehead.  She was of a bright, energetic disposition and was ready to do more than her part in anything she undertook.  She was twice married.  Her first husband was William Leaton and they resided in St. Louis where their daughter, Mrs. Theron D. Wilson was born.  Her second husband was Cornelius A. Marsh of this town.  They lived in? south of the town, but finally settled in West Rose which they only sold this last spring, moving into the village of Rose their declining years.  The children of this marriage were Mrs. Frank J. Mitchell, William A. and Cornelius A. Marsh, Jr., all of whom with her husband, and other daughter, Mrs. Wilson, survive her.  The funeral services were held from the home Thursday afternoon at 2:30.  Rev. A. B. Wright, pastor of the Baptist church, of which, for many years, she had been a devoted member, officiating.  Interment in Rose cemetery.

     ROSE, August 28 - Cornelius A. Marsh, Sr., who died at his home here on Sunday, will be held tomorrow afternoon at two o'clock.  He was a trustee and prominent member of Rose Baptist church, a veteran of the Civil War, being a member of Company H. Ninth New York Heavy Artillery.  He is survived by his three children, William A. Marsh, Mrs. Irene E. Mitchell and Cornelius A. Marsh, Jr., all of Rose.

DRILL FACTORY EMPLOYEE DIED SUDDENLY MONDAY

Charles Whitehead Met Death in Stockroom Hew Officers at L O.G.T.

     The residents of Macedon were shocked to hear of the sudden death of Charles Whitehead, which occurred Monday morning. Mr. Whitehead had gone to his work, as carpenter on the new building being built by Bickford and Huffman Company.  He went into the stock room to get his tools and falling forward on his face expired before help could be given.  Besides his widow he is survived by five children; Mrs. George Barnes, of Rose, George W., of Chicago; Jennie, Ruth and Gertrude, of Macedon.

MACEDON

     Last Thursday while the funeral services of Charles Whitehead which were being held at the Baptist church, were about closing the high wind overturned a large tree in front of the church.  The tree fell across the trolley and telephone wire delaying trolley traffic on the west bound track.

     One of the spires from the cupola was also torn off by the wind and stuck through the roof.

     A memorial service was held at the Baptist church Sunday by Macedon and Palmyra Lodges I. O. O. F. in memory Charles R. Whitehead.

     Mrs. Susan Whitehead passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. George Barnes, Saturday evening, Nov. 27, 1920, at the age of 64 years.  Mrs. Whitehead was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Greiner and when a young lady became the wife of Charles Whitehead of Macedon. She was of a happy disposition and had a smile for every one. Though a great sufferer, she never uttered a word of complaint.  She is survived by Mrs. Barnes, with whom she made her home, and a son, George Whitehead of Washington, D. C; also three sisters, Mrs. Jennie Converse of Syracuse, Mrs. Ruth Tyler of Newport News. Va., and Mrs. B. E. Hankinson of Chicago.  The funeral was held at her late home Tuesday at 10 o'clock with burial at Macedon.

THE LAKE SHORE NEWS DECEMBER 2, 1920.

     The death of Susan E. Whitehead occurred about six o'clock, Saturday afternoon, Nov. 27, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. George A. Barnes, of West Rose. She was 64 years old, the cause of death being heart disease.  She was born in Red Hook, New Jersey, on Dec. 19, 1855, and was a daughter of Andrew and Ann Plumtree Greiner. She married Charles Whitehead, who died about fourteen years ago. The following children survive; Nellie, Mrs. George Barnes, of Rose; George, of Washington, D. C; Jennie, Mrs. Ernest Converse, of Syracuse; Ruth, Mrs. Warren Tyler, of Newport News, Va., and one sister, Mrs. B. E. Hankinson, of Chicago, Ill. The funeral services were held at the home at 10 a. m., Tuesday, Rev. Mr. Phelps, pastor of the Rose Free Methodist church, officiating. Interment was made in Macedon.
