George Baughman, member of one of the pioneer families of Coe township, died Dec. 22 in Long Beach, California. Mr. Baughman was the son of Charles and Julia Baughman. In his boyhood they lived on what is known as the Carl Baughman farm near Shepherd,

Mr. Baughman was nearly 73 years old, having been born January 6th 1861. He was a cousin of Carl Baughman and an uncle of Charles Wilsey.

Seeking to benefit his health, Mr. Baughman went west more than 40 years ago. He had been back two or three times since to visit his old home and friends.

Mrs. Henry Bassett died at her home in this village Monday evening, after an illness of several months, though she was confined to her bed only a few days.

She was born in Lenawee county, Michigan, Feb. 24, 1843, and married Henry Bassett in 187l. They came here 10 years ago, and Mr. Basset passed away only a few months ago. Mrs. Bassett leaves 2 sisters and 1 brother to mourn her death.

The funeral was held Wednesday afternoon, Rev. F.M. McClintic officiating. (Rev. McClintic is from Fenton.) Interment is in Salt River cemetery.

Her sister, Mrs. Booth cared for her during her last illness.
 

Edward Bellinger, a resident of this county since June, 1861 died at his home near this city Monday from dropsy and heart trouble at the age of 61 years 5 months and 2 days.

Mr. Bellinger was born in Defiance County, Ohio Sept. 8, 1844. He came to this county in l861 and in 1866 united in marriage with Miss Mary Mull of Lincoln township, five children were born to this union. Mrs. Bellinger died and later Mr. Bellinger married Mies Ola Davis. Three sons were born to them. Besides his children and widow he leaves other relatives.

Funeral services were at his late home with Rev. Thomas Cox officiating.

Funeral services for Mrs. Martha E, Beebe, 82, a resident of Isabella Co. for the past 75 years, were held at the Stinson Chapel Sunday afternoon with the Rev. C. W. MacKenzie officiating. Mrs. Beebe died Thurs. Jan. 5 at her home in Lincoln Twp.

The deceased was born March 31,1856 in New York, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Tomlinson and came to this county with her parents at the age of 7, she located in Lincoln twp. where she has resided ever since,

In 1875 she was married to Joel Beebe. Two sons, Wm.D. and Charles were born to the couple. Her husband died in 1879 and she later married Henry Beebe. To this union 5 sons were born, Howard N., Joel R., Lee, Roy and Ralph. She also had 3 step-sisters Etta, Mary and Martha. 2 of her sons Wm. and Howard and her husband preceded her in death.

Surviving are 5 sons, all of Lincoln Twp. 3 step daus; 1 bro Charles Tomlinson of Lincoln twp., and 1 sister Mrs. Alice White of Riverdale. Interment was made in the Lincoln twp. cemetery.

Mrs. H. W. Bennett, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Atkins of Coe Twp, died at the age of 27, Her son, George died Dec. 19, both victims of diptheria.

Charles W. Benton was born August 11, 1855, at Conneaut, Ashtubula county, Ohio, and departed this life Feb. 4, 1913, at his home in Chippewa Township, age 57 years 5months and 24 days.

He came with his parents to Clinton county, Mich. when he was 12 years old. When he was 14 years old he united with the Baptist Church.

August 4, 1878, he was united in marriage with Flora E. Walker. To this union was born 1 child, Alta A. Mullet.

Funeral was conducted by Rev. Kring of Chippewa M. E. church.

Calvin Bigelow, one of the county's pioneers, died at his home in this village Friday afternoon from Bright's disease after an illness extending over several weeks, at the age of 71 years, 11 months, 13 days. Mr. Bigelow came to this state with his parents when a small boy and in l862 was married to Harriet Shaul and settled on the farm, 1 mile west of the village where his son Jay is now living and where his home has been since his marriage with the exception of about 3 years that he lived in the village before coming here 5 years ago to make his home. To Mr. and Mrs. Bigelow, 5 children were born, 2 daughters dying in infancy. The three surviving ones are Mrs. James Curtis, Mrs. Hattie Weaver and Jay Bigelow all living in this vicinity. Mr. Bigelow was an old soldier and the funeral was held under the auspices of the D.A.R. Sunday at 2 o'clock at his late home. Burial in Salt River Cemetery.

On Sunday, December 11, at 12 o'clock, Mary E. Bigelow, wife of Horace 0. Bigelow, passed to the true life beyond in the 60th year of her age. She was the daughter of Zebelon and Sophia Scribner Phillips, formerly of Riga, Monroe Co. N.Y.

Mr. Bigelow and wife were among the early settlers of Isabella county; they moved to Coe in 1856.

Survivors: husband and four grown children, Mrs. Adeline A. Case of Turlock, Calif, Chandler B. Bigelow of Yolo, Calif, Mrs. Frances E. McKenna and Horace 0. Bigelow, Jr, of this village (Shepherd).

Funeral services were held at the family residence on Washington Ave, Dec. 13, L.B. Moulton of Grand Rapids, Spiritualist, officiating.

William B. Bowen died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Rose Rolfe, Delwin, Wednesday Mar. 30, at 7:30 p.m. Deacon Bowen, as he was called, was born at Warren, Pa. June 28th, 1815. He was nearly 77 years of age at his death.

He married at age 25, Sarah Rume Stewart who died about 3 years ago.

Mr. Bowen came to Michigan in 1842; in the fall of 1854 he purchased of the U.S. government 80 acres of land, 112 miles north of where Shepherd is now. The area was unbroken wilderness then.

After four years he took his family to Wellsboro, Pa. where they remained for 10 years before returning to Mich. After his wife died he shared the home of his daughter at Delwin.

Funeral services at the Baptist church at Shepherd. Rev. A.P. McDonald, assisted by Rev. D.B. Davidson, conducted the services.

In the death of Miss Geneva Bradt, the 14 year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. D.L. Bradt of Shepherd, which occurred last Thursday night, a deplorable condition of affairs has become public. The young girl was remarkably developed for one of her age and intelligent, possessed of a sunny disposition and more than ordinarily handsome. The girl was taken ill Monday and a physician summoned. The peculiar symptons of the patient aroused the suspicions of the family physician and a quiet investigation began, to the end that Prosecuting Attorney, R. R. Dusenbury of Mt. Pleasant, was called into the case. The result was that a warrant was at once issued for Clyde Priestly of Shepherd who was apprehended and placed in jail in Mt. Pleasant.

The girl made an ante-mortem statement in which she implicated W.W. Cox, a former bartender in Shepherd and he was apprehended in North Star. It has been ascertained that other arrests will follow. The result of the autopsy showed that death was caused by poison administered by parties unknown.

The young girl began the career that terminated so rudely last week in a hotel in Shepherd where she was thrown into the company of older girls who surrounded her with an environment entirely of a vicious character.

Cox and Priestly are out on bail. Warrants have been issued for the arrest of J.H. Angle and one Allen, neither of whom has been apprehended.

Mrs. Clinton Burley whose illness was mentioned in last week's Enterprise, passed away at an early hour Friday. She had been in delicate health for years and for the past five weeks very sick.

Dora Hunter Burley was born in Hillsdale county, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Horace Hunter, the former deceased who later came to Chippewa township, this county, where Mrs. Hunter resides. Mrs. Burley and her husband have been citizens of Mt. Pleasant most of the time since their marriage, occupying a pleasant home on Normal Avenue.

Three daughters are left with the bereft husband, also her mother and three brothers.

Rev. J.C. DeVinney conducted the funeral sunday afternoon at the Methodist church.
