Aged Indian and Grandson Die in Home Fire
Fire Mysteriously Snuffed Out Before House Burns….Neighbor Finds Bodies
Daniel Neyome, 33 and William Peters, 86, were found dead in the Peters’ home, situated about two
miles east of Beal City. Monday evening, according to report made by investigating officer Lauren Neal
of the Isabella County sheriff’s office. The house had been partially destroyed by fire.
The blaze apparently had started from a heater. The men evidently had been out in the rain Sunday
and placed their clothing near the coal heater to dry, and the fire had resulted. The room where the heater
was located was badly burned. Both the walls and curtains were practically consumed.
An oil can which had exploded was found in the room. As the fire with its apparent headway had
rather mysteriously quenched itself hours before the bodies of the two men were found, the theory was
advanced by examining officers that the oil can explosion in the tight quarters had put out the blaze
before the building could be completely burned.
Neyome’s body was found near a window. The fire evidently had aroused him from the cot
near the heater where he was sleeping, and he had made an unsuccessful effort to get out of the building.
His body was badly burned.
Peter’s died from asphyxiation. He was found partially undressed, lying on the bed in the adjoining
bedroom.
Aloysisus Andres, a neighbor, discovered the tragedy. He first noticed that the door window of the
Peters home was blown out when he took his cattle to pasture Monday morning about 8 a.m., but he did not
investigate the matter until about 5 p.m. when he again passed the place with his cattle. He immediately
reported the incident and Coroner R. N. Northway was called.
Neyome, who resides in Lansing with his wife and four children, was called to Mt. Pleasant for his
physical examination for the draft on Saturday June 5. Peters was his grandfather.
Double funeral services will be held this afternoon (Thursday). June 10, at two o’clock at the Northbranch
Indian church with the Rev. Frank Peters officiating. Burial will be made in the Rosbush cemetery. Stinson
and Sons are in charge.
A resident of Isabella county for 75 years, William Peters was born August 4, 1856, at Portland. He is
survived by his daughter, Mrs. Mike Neyome.
Daniel Neyome was born in Isabella county, March 15, 1910. He spent most of his life here, until he
recently took a job in a defense plant in Lansing. Survivors include his widow, Jennie; daughters, Shirley,
Margaret, and Virginia Lee; son Norman; and parents, Mr. and Mrs. Mike Neyome.
